A friend of mine just started a new job. He makes good money, but didn't even take a week off between jobs and never has. I don't get people like him. Perhaps during the pandemic it doesn't make that much sense to take off a week since you'll likely be stuck at home, but generally speaking, I've always taken a week or two between jobs.
I understand if you're living paycheck to paycheck but if you're making good money, why not take some time for yourself. Am i wrong about this? |
| There is no right or wrong; it's all personal preference. |
| Why does anyone have to be wrong or right? It's a matter of personal finances, personal preference, and the preferences of the new company. Nothing to be "wrong" or "right" about. |
| Some people LOVE what they do for a living. |
| How much does he make? |
| I've never voluntarily taken time off between jobs. |
| I took 6 months last year. I had an offer 2 days after being laid off, but knew I needed the break and wanted to renovate my new house. I would typically take a week or two, and that’s usually been tied to an event like a move, planned vacation, holidays, etc. |
| I try to schedule a few weeks in between because we can afford it, but there's no right answer. A friend of mine got laid off with 6 months severance, found a new job very quickly and asked for a start date that was 3 months later. I was so jealous (in a good way, happy for her)! |

I did say that I understand that some people can't afford it. But he makes 200K a year and is married to someone that makes more.
I gave him shit about it, but he said, he just likes to keep going...but then complains about working too much. |
x2. I usually need the money more than I need/want the time. |
| I'll sleep when I'm dead |
Yeah I went right from one job to the next a year ago because I needed the money. We earn a good living but not such a good living I'd leave a week's worth of wages on the table. Anyway a year ago COVID was starting and all I could think about was how scared I was - having a week off then would have been a total waste. |
| I always take off 1-2 weeks between jobs. DH just started a new job and only took the Thursday and Friday before off. I don't get it either. Him taking longer would have been no concern financially but he didn't see the point. |
| My daughter took three days because her new job didn’t allow days off for three months. The pandemic was just starting. She ran around like crazy and got a lot of critical business and doctors appointments handled. Then the same week she started, the office closes and everyone was forced to telecommute. |
| It depends. If my health insurance is good through the rest of the month, I might take a few weeks off. My last transition, insurance was terminated on my last day of employment, so I was on eggshells the 6 days before my next start date. |
