Is your hair fried from color?

Anonymous
I’ve let my hair go gray over the past year and just don’t have the guts to leave it be, but it’s so much healthier right now since I stopped dying it; my gray is soft rather than coarse. Is there anything that really works to keep dyed hair healthy?

No. But I have only used demi-permanent color from a natural based line that doesn't have ammonia and the other top offending chemicals. I don't go lighter, only dye to have the few grays blend with natural color. Plus I don't heat style or blow dry. So my hair looks as healthy as ever.

My nearly white hair colored a dark blond mix feels great too. I use Garnier (2 different colors mixed half/half) and cut back shampooing. I use ‘Love’ brand to wash/condition. Because my hair grows fast & it’s so white I do need to do every 4 - 5 weeks.

I’m fully vaxxed now and am considering going back to my professional colorist but I sure love the savings - and compliments.

Not since I stopped highlighting it.

I have dark hair. I started just doing all-over color just at roots (about 1/8 grey at age 51--not a lot). Every 5 months or so, she will add in partial lowlights to give it dimension.

My hair is shiny and glossy again. The highlights really were drying, especially over time. And, frankly, with olive skin lighter color washed me out anyways and the darker color makes my blue eyes pop.

Color didn't damage my hair, but I never went lighter or did highlights. That's what really does a number on your hair.

Salon color never damaged my hair; in fact, some of the brands contained conditioners which left my hair super-soft. Highlighting, however, is very drying and damaging. My hair would feel like straw after a highlight.

OP, there are a lot of us who stopped coloring around a year ago and are enjoying the freedom of not having to continually dye our hair. try inoa, organic hair color or the color at Whole Foods (German Line). I stopped coloring once my hair (which once took color well) just got orange and friend looking. My grey is gorgeous.

You can also do semi or demi. You actually do get grey coverage but only about 2 weeks of full coverage before it starts peeking through, Shine for days though.

Did you do a lot of research into this? I am think I'll try the same but wonder how the demi-will fade over time. I'm fine with gray showing (I have a lot growing in) but would prefer it to be less obvious.

PP here. I am thinking about this. Do you just dye the roots with the demi or semi?

OP here - I don’t seem to see gray-haired women my age (or even older) out and about much. I’m really struggling with it. And I really am nearly 100% gray. I should check out those groups, it might help!

What’s the difference between salon color and highlights?

I color every 4 weeks and get highlights maybe every three months and my hair is perfectly healthy.

Yes I did a lot of research. I never dyed my hair until I turned 35, when the gray at my hairline started bothering me. I have long curly hair and keeping it healthy while covering a small amount of grey was my priority. The demi color does a great job. I get it to match my natural color. When it fades, the gray hairs become a light brown, new growth is obviously gray. I think it is a great option if you are less than 50% gray. If you have a lot growing in more than 50%, I would still use a Demi but instead of all over I would have them paint it in intermittently as lowlights

Salon color has never damaged my hair. I go to Aveda or r + co. salons for grey coverage. My hair has been long, shiny, and healthy with this plan for ten years. All I use is Joico leave-in spray conditioner.
