All the stylists people have recommended to me have instagrams/portfolios full of long blonde wavy balayage, which is the complete opposite of what I need and want. My hair is thinning and while I'm working with my doctors on the medical side, it's looking awful and I would like to cut it into a fun, kind of edgy, non-mom hair bob. When my hair grows back, I'd like to color it to cover the grays, but I have dark hair and don't want to go lighter. Can anyone recommend a stylist that specializes in dark hair, shorter fun cuts, and what would be awesome would be someone who is really good with thinning hair?
Ideally Falls Church/Arlington/McLean/Fairfax, but I'm willing to travel for the right cut. |
Nothing? Everyone on here has long blonde balayage? |

I have black hair with quite a bit of graying. I have been happy with the stylists at Reflections of You Salons - I go to the Fair Lakes location but they also have locations in Fairfax and Burke. They do a great job with both the color and cut (I keep the length at my shoulder or thereabouts). I have fine, slightly wavy hair, if that matters. |
Creative in Centreville, they do wondrous things with color. |
Tim Shelton was at Ian McCabe Salon West End until it closed when Covid started. He now operates from a one-person studio salon (very nicely set up) in Arlington. He gave me some beautiful bobs -- he takes a long time, they are perfectly even, cut with precision, shiny shiny shiny and would be as edgy as you want them to be (maybe take a photo to show?) He does not do color -only scissoring--but I often find I prefer to do separate people anyway and you can do cuts on one schedule, color on another. He has a really simpatico/down to earth personality. I hesitate to share him haha. http://theidyllwildstudio.com/ |
For color with dark hair, I would look at salons with INOA products or organic colors salons. Gentler and shinier without turning that gross red undertone. |
I love Kelly at Claude Marcel in Alexandria. She is great with dark hair. |
