pokemon cards

How early is appropriate for kid to play pokemon cards? Let's say start with family member first at home.

I think our kid started collecting them at 3.

I don’t think there’s a “too early” honestly. They do have to be able to read fairly well though to understand the cards and what they do. The card game is designed for the elementary set, 2nd/3rd graders or so.

Or if you’re just collecting you can start whenever! They’re hot now and hard to get your hands on though.

My kindergartner has loved them all year.

We own hundreds of Pokémon cards and I don’t think they have ever played a real game. They trade them, collect them but never play a real game with them.

The game is actually easy to play, the play mat in the starter boxes lays out the rules pretty clearly and easily. But I suspect that many people only get the cards for the cards sake.

My 5 year old gets his first pokemon cards from mcdonald happy meal, and now he wants me to get him a deck to play. I am debating if I should buy some cards for him. It drove me a bit crazy to try to teach him to play because I am not a big fan.

And, anyone has ideas how do you know if you pronounce those pokemon animal names correctly? Is there a fan-made website that I can cross check?

My 7 year old started collecting them at 5 when the older kids on the bus gateway drugged her with free pokemon cards. That was the beginning of the end. Then I had to buy more cards, and she started watching the show, then we got an Picachu Build a Bear and then an Evee one and then the video games and then.....

Preach, sister. Pokemon also gateways into Beyblades. And yes, there's a freaking TV show for that, too. As if it could get worse.

Pretty sure my son started playing the game at about 6 years old. It's great for them to learn the game and do something with the cards beyond just collecting. He spent many happy hours crafting different decks + playing the game with anyone in the house who would play. DH and I and his sister all had to learn. It's also good for mastering basic arithmetic skills.

My ds collected them from 5-7.

My daughter started with them at 5, but didn’t really get into the game part until she was able to read well and do double digit addition/subtraction. Then she joined a local gaming league and played for hours every weekend (one of us always attended too) until the pandemic hit. So this has been going on for 5+ years at this point. My husband and I are now very skilled Pokémon card game players. There’s something I never in my life thought I would say.
