10-year-old's waxy ears

My son's ears are DISGUSTING. We have drops but it doesn't do much. It looks like someone infused his ears with movie theater nachos. HELP.

What does his pediatrician say?

He gave us drops, which are doing nothing. He has had a deep-clean once before. But I'm not going to the doctor only for this cosmetic issue - it seems not to affect his hearing. But it looks awful.

I have always had waxy ears. I shampoo them when I'm washing my hair (be gentle but a little soap at the outer ear helps break things up) and use a qtip after I get out of the shower. The qtip is just wiping the outside and picking up water: he shouldn't shove wax into his ears with it

Waxy ears run in our family. My son has his cleaned every 6 months at the pediatrician.

I’ve been trying to describe the intensity in color of my daughters earwax. You nailed it for sure.

My son's drips out so it's on the outside of his ear and it's really dark. It's totally gross but his dr said it's better than getting clogged inside and it's just genetics.

We have to clean my son’s ears daily with a q-tip. Just the areas that are visible—not digging in there because that can make it worse.

I bought a little kit on Amazon for ear wax. It has a scoop with a light on the end.

our pediatrician recommended using drops a couple times a week before a bath/shower then make sure DS puts his head/ear in the water stream

How often does he clean his ears?

Check with your pediatrician on this. They can be really dangerous. Try a wet washcloth with a finger.

I do too. Always have. And now that I'm older they sometimes clog. Happened right at the beginning of COVID and probably from wearing ear buds for zoom calls all the time.

Letting some of the warm shower water run in each ear during EVERY shower keeps mine clean. But I know that might be hard for a little kid to deal with.

DD’s are also nasty. It’s like really dark caramel. Ugh! Qtips are a necessity in our house along with Debrox.

Ugh. We tried Debrox but it didn't get down deep in there, and DD didn't want me to try it again.
