snake plant (indoor)

Anonymous
I have a snake plant. I know it is a succulent and is supposed to be very low maintenance, requiring little natural light and low watering (once a month is what I have read).

Ms Black Thumb here is messing up its care. I noticed today that one leaf is all brown at the end, and another is super soggy, almost as if it was bloated with water from the inside which softened the whole leaf and made it soggy and droopy. When I cut it off, it was mushy all the way to the dirt.

The rest of the leaves (maybe 15 of them?) look fine.

The soil feels slightly damp to the touch. I probably last watered it 2 weeks ago and keep to about a once a month watering schedule.

I’d appreciate help to recessitate it!

I have a few snake plants because I heard they are low maintenance and I have a brown thumb. I water about once every 1.5 -2 weeks. Not too much water. Just enough to moisten the soil. They are near a window but the window has some bushes near it so there isn’t a lot of light. The window is south facing so gets some light though. So far it’s been healthy and I’ve had it for 4-5 months.

Does your pot have drainage holes? If not that could be an issue.

This is my guess. I would say it sounds like overwatering, but your once a month schedule sounds right. Is the water draining out the bottom through holes? If not, even though you aren't watering too often, the water is sitting too long at the bottom of the pot.

The dark and dry leave could just be damage from handling- you knocked it into something when moving it, cat got to it, etc. That happened to me once. Just cut off the damaged portion and it will grow back.

You always check the soil before watering no matter how much time has passed between waterings. Only water when needed. Stick your pointer in the soil and check. Also, make sure you don’t water at the leaves, it will hold water and damage it. Only water the soil.
