Help me become a peleton fanatic. Please.

We have one and I just don’t see why it is so great. I have a bad knee and doc says to use it. It hurts my butt even though I have a pad. Help me, I want to be a peleton person.

This is why I don’t buy one. I want to be a spinner but my butt says no.

How long are you riding? I am only doing 20 mins rides to start.

We’ve had our Peloton for 3 years and think that, in some ways, the 20 min rides are harder than the longer ones because they don’t really put in any breaks.

In any case, for butt pain, get a padded seat and padded bike shorts.

OP.

Become a Peloton fanatic.

**Waves Jedi hand over OP’s mind**

Did it work?

It takes me several days (like maybe 4-5 days in a week?) of consistent riding to make my butt stop hurting. If I ride once or twice and then take a week off, it still hurts. So maybe do short rides over several days to start?

Take a Matt Wilpers 20 min warm up ride to learn the technique and make sure you're in the correct position and pedaling correctly. Your butt shouldn't hurt after a week or two. My guess is you're not setup right. Have you checked seat positioning?

Butt pad owners: can you tell me exactly which one you have?

I think you either become a fan on your own or you don't. I never did spinning before I bought one last year. But I'm not going back to a gym anytime soon and I need to exercise for my mental health (and b/c I like to eat!). I didn't expect to like it. But I LOVE it. I pick classes based on music. I played around with instructors and found a core 5 that I like. There's a couple I decided aren't for me and that's OK. I find the coaching to be really good and I'm not strong on willpower but I feel myself wanting to do better.

Padded bike shorts. And the PP's advice above about how it takes many days before your butt stops hurting.

Good luck!

I bought these padded bike shorts: Women's Padded Classic Bike... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y0JDUY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And this padded seat: Schwinn Cruiser Gel Seat Cover https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0030RSHFA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Nearly 4 years later, they’re still going strong!

Yep, padded bike shorts plus padded seat plus making sure the height is set correctly.

I couldn’t get into it. It wasn’t pain or discomfort, I just found it boring. I need to either be outdoors or have the energy of an in-person class.

Make sure to do a stretch or warm up before. Your knee and other joints need to be warmed up and it you won’t burn out as fast.

OP, I definitely did not like Peloton the first year we had it. This fall, I finally stopped comparing myself to all the other Peloton riders, and decided to go at my own speed. For 2-3 months, I did 15-20 minute low impact rides only (3-5 times per week). At 41, I’ve had arthritis in my knees since 30 and was frustrated during the beginner rides because I didn’t want to leave the saddle.

Eventually I could easily handle a 30 minute low impact ride and switched to regular 20 minute classes. Then 30 minute classes, etc. I continue to stay in the saddle, but can really push resistance without bothering my knees. I ride 4-5 times per week with a mix of times—it’s okay to do 20 minute rides.

Also, find an instructor or music that you love. Once I was able to do regular rides, I’ve lived in the 90s with Robin. It’s been so much fun to hear my favorite songs again.

Have fun and be kind to yourself. The Peloton can still be transformative at your own speed.

Have you tried their non-bike offerings like running, walking, yoga, cardio, strength? Maybe you will find something you like there. That said, not everyone likes Peloton. I am a fanatic (9-10 hours a week) but my DH hates it. He bicycles outside and lifts on his own. He claims Peloton is for OCD people, which I don’t disagree with.
