Help me start using makeup

Anonymous
I've never really learned to wear makeup. Since middle school, I've mostly been a moisturizer, mascara, and neutral lip girl. I always been blessed with good skin so was never drawn to makeup the way some of my friends were and now I've woken up at 28 and realized I don't know the first thing about makeup. I consider myself quite skilled when it comes to clothes and hair, just never learned what to do with my face. I want to know what to buy. Which foundations? Which blushes? Which eye shadows? The things I do have are higher end so I would probably lean in that direction but I've heard that with some things, the drugstore stuff is just better. I have Snow White skin, big round blue eyes, and dark brown hair (with some redder highlights). What are some great products to jump on? For familial health reasons, I would rather not just go into a bluemercury and have them tell me what to do so I need your help DCUM!

No one can tell you what shades of makeup to use without seeing you.

Check out YouTube - try Emily Noel, she does make up tutorials and reviews & keeps things pretty simple. She also uses and reviews a lot of drug store products. Spend on foundation & skincare, try drug store lines to start with eye makeup.

E.L.F. is a brand that Target sells, they have some good products. Make sure you have appropriate make up brushes.

I wear a lot of MAC products- if you go to their website you can live chat with someone & get product advice.

It sounds like you are a natural beauty so just mascara, blush, and tinted lipgloss should be plenty, but you could also add a little eyeliner. You can go on Youtube, try to find someone with similar coloring, then order what they use off of Sephora/possibly Nordstrom. They should both have easy return policies, but double check!

When you’re looking for product recommendations, pay careful attention to the skin types of those making the recommendations. There are no universally great products. Many of the main YouTube ers are younger and have oily skin. I do not, so many of their recommendations are universally awful for me, and many of my best products are on their “didn’t work for me” list.

With your coloring, I would also look to a YouTuber named Zabrena, who does mostly drug store looks and has your skin/eye color combination. Once you figure out which specific products work, then you can look for many inspirations as to what kind of color looks work, using the products that work with your skin type.Zabrena does a lot of very colorful eyes, so you probably want to take product recommendations and get the tones that you prefer.

My favorite make up you too are is Lisa Eldredge. She is a highly successful make up artist, and she does lots of editorial work in vogue and stuff, but she also has lots of really great advice for beginners.

What look at you going for?

I have close to your coloring and my daily lipstick (when I wore it) was Revlon’s Smoky Rose. I cannot emphasize enough how much this lifts the face.

But I don’t know what you want from makeup. A nice, “no makeup” look? Smoky eyes? Full beat? Do you actually want to do full makeup?

Lisa Eldridge and Wayne Goss videos are very nice. I always recommend Kevyn Aucoin’s first two books for getting all sorts of makeup knowhow, from very full looks to just highlighter basically.

At 28, you probably don't need as much as you think. Some basic powder/tinted moisturizer/sunscreen, a little mascara and some lip gloss can do wonders.
