Virginia 1099-G

Anonymous
I am not having much luck with this question online but maybe someone knows. I got a 1099-G from Virginia for tax year 2019 that states a refund/“overpayment” amount. I am guessing from the language on it this is because I itemized deductions and the refund is thus taxable income. Okay, makes sense. But the amount is lower than what TurboTax has recorded (and I received) as my VA state tax refund for 2019. Do I manually enter the number on the 1099-G or use the number TT has? I am not sure why the amounts differ. Anyone have a reason this would be?

You’re talking about 2019 and not 2020? In 2019 Virginia mailed everyone tax relief checks up to $220 for married couples so that amount would be included in your 1099-G and not on your tax return from the previous year.
