If you are not a sibling/ legacy etc.? |
Very |
Agreed - very, very selective with lots of applicants and very few openings |
Extremely. Have known quite a few kids who got into all the top schools but turned down by Potomac. Have heard from a number of educators that Potomac is the region's hardest school in which to gain acceptance. |
PP here. Forgot to add that I know 2 families who tried to get sibs into Potomac for 2 and 3 years and got turned down so it's not easy for multiple-kid families either. |
The claims here are overstated. Potomac is an excellent school, but no more competitive than any other very good local independent school. There are many others that are more competitive to get into.

Maybe some stats, like "Potomac accepted 1 in X applicants for Y grade last year" would help, as opposed to anecdotal evidence. |
Probably similar to Sidwell in terms of admissions stats. Unlike other Virginia schools, Potomac draws from all over the DC area so that increases the applicant pool. |
I agree, particularly at the high school level. In fact, I know of at least 2, mediocre at best students who were accepted for 9th grade entry. Nice kids, definitely, but far from sparkling students. |
Check out Georgia Irvin's updated book. I think it has application and acceptance figures for all schools. (I believe the previous edition did, at least.) You can calculate an acceptance rate from those numbers. That's the only way to get at these things empirically. Everything else is anecdotal. |
Talk about anecdotal. You think StA & Sidwell are chock full of rocket scientists? I know plenty of kids in those schools who are not, shall we say, the sharpest knife in drawer. Schools like Sidwell, Potomac, and StA/NCS are great because they produce well rounded, balanced kids who go on to make a significant impact in life.... not because they're churning out future PhD candidates (sure some students, but certainly not all). |
The 10:45 post with the info about the Irvine book is helpful -- the rest is just water cooler (or Starbucks counter) chatter. |
Acceptance rate may not mean much -- how hard is it to get in is a function of what kind of credentials you need rather than just the ratio between applicants and number of spots. |
Good point PP. |
I've heard that this is a very good year to get into Potomac. For what that's worth!
