2700 SF 1918 rowhouse with 3 adults and 2 kids (basement apartment) with two zone gas HVAC system we've pretty consistently averaged about $105 a month the last few years - well above the average in July, August and December and well below the average in April, May, Sept & Oct.

Numbers were up in 2020 because everyone was home but we put solar on the roof and replaced one of our gas furnaces with a heat pump so expecting to be paying nothing for electric from April to September going forward with hopefully flat electric bills for Nov-Jan.

$127 (would be $130 without the $40 annual credit for Smart Cooling) for end-unit townhouse with 1,800 square feet including basement in Fairfax County. We keep the thermostat on 65/64 in the winter, but even at that temperature, I already noticed the emergency electric heat coming on this week. You must be going through a lot more electric heat due to where you keep the thermostat and multiplying by 2 systems using electric. I know our house is a lot smaller but I think a lot of our bill is the dryer and dishwasher, which we use a lot. We'd still be around $300 average even multiplied by 2.3, assuming all costs go up with house size.

Highest was $182 in August because I also keep it in the low 60's in the summer. Dec-Feb average $118, ignoring the $40 credit that comes off the December bill.

You have convinced me not to raise the thermostat or move to a bigger house.

$175 or less, 1500sq ft + basement, 1920s, pg county. Heat pump. OP’s seems really high but I guess it’s a much bigger house.

I’m in a single family 4,000/4,200 sq ft house in NY. Our house is old and has some original detail windows and last month our bill was 1k! Sometimes 700 in the winter. But we’re all home all day now and heating all the levels all the time... good to know it’s not crazy abnormal.

70 year old rowhouse, 1500 sq feet. Last bill was $49.

But heat is kept at 65, though south facing windows often bump us a couple degrees.

Northern VA - we just moved from a 1700' TH to a 3600' TH. Both 3 story end units. No basement in either place. Smaller TH was built in late 90s; larger TH is a new build.

Former TH - average electric about 100/month. Was as low as $55-60 during the winter, and $150/month+ during the hottest summer months. In that house, gas ran about $25/month in the summer and $115/month in the winter. So I estimate that we were averaging maybe $150-$200/month in total energy costs for the 1700' TH.

Current 3600' TH seems to go between $85-170/month for electric, but we moved in late summer, so not sure what the peak summer billing will be. Also, these bills reflect both of us working from home full-time, where in our old house, the average was based on us working from the office. We seemed to be running about $35/month for gas (water heater and stove + some heat) during the fall. Suspect that we'll have winter gas bills around $150/200 month, though once again, we're keeping it warmer because we're both home full-time. Overall, it seems that the total month energy bill will be about $200-$300/month, so a bit more than before, but not as much as I'd expected, since we'd doubled the square footage in the move.

The interesting thing is that our same month gas bill seemed to decrease slightly when we moved to the new house, even though the new house had a gas stove, and the old house was an electric stove. I'm wondering if the difference is the tankless water heater in the new house?

Normal 1993 colonial- $100 electricity $130 gas in winter, $170 in summer combined. Like $70 on those months we don’t have to run heat or ac

We keep it at 70 in winter but 65 on our top floor because we like sleeping cold.

TO the poster from NY--I grew up in upstate NY, and one of the few pieces of advice my father gave to me when I moved and started looking for apartments is--NEVER rent a place that heats with electric. Your bills will be through the roof in winter. Switch to gas! We have a 3,500 square foot in MD (so ridiculously high taxes). no fewer than 4 separate systems, the house is over 100 years old, still have the old sash windows, etc., and the addition has no basement so it is freezing. But still, w/6 people at home all day all the time, and a house that lacks appropriate updates and insulation so far this winter (our first in the house) we're averaging about $175 gas, $175 electric per month. So it's still way cheaper to heat with gas than electric.

$500 average for 5000 sq foot, almost twice that in winter, much less rest of the year
