Trisomy condition in subsequent pregnancies

Anonymous
Of those of you whose babies had a trisomy condition (eg, trisomy 13, 18, or 21), has anyone had another baby with a trisomy condition in a subsequent pregnancy? We are newly pregnant after a loss due to a trisomy condition and I am terrified of this happening again.

Yes, having a previous incidence of a trisomy does mean there is an increased chance of recurrence. However increased does not necessarily mean it's extremely high in the grand scheme of things, the chances overall are still very small. You can look up the medical literature on recurrence of trisomies or talk to your doctor. Of course the risk also depends on things like age.

Anecdotally, a friend lost her first to t18 and has had 3 healthy babies since. Best wishes, OP.

Best wishes OP. My sister has two babies with Trisomy but the third was completely healthy.

In general, there is minimal increased risk if any, except for certain rare cases. Did you speak to a genetic counselor/do genetic testing?

I was carrying twins. One was T18 and one was not and was born healthy. My subsequent pregnancy was a healthy child as well.

As long as it was a straight trisomy and not the result of a translocation, recurrence risks are extremely low. Talk to your genetic counselor for more specifics.
