Enrolling daughter in va public high school.

Anonymous
My daughter is currently in eighth grade at a private K-8. We live in fairfax county. I would like to enroll her in a non-local public high school because the local high school does not have the foreign language she is interested in. What is the timeline for doing this and what steps do we need to take ?

Do you mean that you are applying out-of-county? You will have to enroll as a tuition-paying student if there are seats available. You will be responsible for transportation.

If you are applying out-of-boundary, there must be a compelling reason such as IB v. AP or foreign language, yes. There also must be seats available and you are responsible for transportation.

Check the websites for application process.

Why would this be different than enrolling a son?

Transfer portal open up in February. The other school must be open to transfers.,

Do you care that it’s not certain she will go to school in person full time next year if you choose FCPS?

Which HS is her local school, which HS is your target school and what is the language?

PPs are correct in that you will be responsible for transportation (no bus to out of boundary school) and generally you are assigned the closest HS to your house that has the requested foreign language and openings.

I would call the high school you are interested in and speak to the registrar. They can give you all of the information you need. Much better information than strangers on the internet.

As you can see, be prepared for a simple question to spark huge reactions at your public school. This should be your biggest take away from this thread.

Uh huh. Being an entitled smug ass is practically an entire course sequence for private school kids.

If your child is not currently enrolled in FCPS, it will be more difficult. There are typically a limited number of slots for transfers for each foreign language. They may fill up before the deadline. And they may fill up before you can enroll your child in FCPS because you are currently enrolled in private.

It depends on what schools close to you offer the foreign language you want whether they will be filled up early or not. The more desirable school, the more likely you will not get a spot.
