Pelosi's Style

The Speaker of the House is the only person in Washington who would wear a leather dress to work. At 80, she still dresses in a way that showcases her curves. Her heels are mind-blowing to me and she is never afraid of bright colors. I think it's so fascinating that someone so "establishment" is so nontraditional and unafraid when it comes to her wardrobe. I wish the broader local fashion culture would follow suit. Whether you like her politics (or fashion) or not, there's something to appreciate about the third most powerful person in America regularly wearing sparkly pink heels to work. We've had a generation of women who have been groundbreaking for bringing women into positions of power. She is breaking new ground by bringing frivolous and unashamed femininity to the highest levels of power. You don't need a black pantsuit to be taken seriously.

Here’s a thread 10 pages deep on Pelosi: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/868455.page#16800181

She can wear whatever she wants because she's so powerful.

Shes awesome. I dress in bright colors and with individuality... but i admittedly lack elegance and power. She’s an icon.

Oh, no! She looks like she only has just one leg in the photo wearing blue dress!

What I think is so cool about her is that she’s always worn flashy (for Washington) clothes. Even before she had power. The quote from her biography that has always stuck out to me is from her former chief of staff:
“I think she probably had to work harder because she is pretty. You would hear Members make comments, all kinds of comments about her and how much her clothes cost. She’d be speaking and I’d be sitting behind these Members. One Member would say, ‘That suit she’s wearing is what my wife would spend in five years on her wardrobe.’ They weren’t listening to her speech. They were focusing on her appearance. She just had a glamour about her and such a style that became the first impression. Then it became incumbent on her to prove herself beyond that: ‘I’m not just a pretty face. I am also a serious contender.’”
She dealt with all the crud that anyone of us would get from dressing like a Barbie. She was just so good at her job that it stopped mattering. She never faltered.

I think this, plus having an otherwise conservative look - her hair and makeup are v conservative - lets her wear these bolder choices. She has them tailored to fit her perfectly, too, which also contributes.

I think she looks amazing.

She doesn't have a particularly easy body to dress. I think I read that she's actually 5'2 (though google says 5'5 - 5'2 makes much more sense if you've met her in person) and she's obviously well endowed. People with bodies like hers often go too frumpy or too bombshell but she walks the line very well and is always fashion forward. I do wonder how she makes the time to shop for such nice clothes and get them sent off to the tailor Personal shopper (beside her husband of course)? I think there was a thread once that mentioned the slits in her dresses and those are a little scandy but at 80, you can get away with that.
