Speaking of NYC burbs

Which NYC burbs are the best to raise kids in if your DH's office is near Grand Central?

I’d look toward Dobbs Ferry and Irvington, maybe other rivertowns. If looking for the toniest - Scarsdale.

Isn't Bronxville the toniest?

^Maybe. Scarsdale is the richest, according to this https://www.businessinsider.com/scarsdale-new-york-east-coast-richest-town-photo-tour-2019-3. Neither is my cup of tea anyway.

+1 also check out Sleepy Hollow and Briarcliff Manor.

Anything on the metro north line. What’s your budget?

I personally prefer Darien or Westport. I would stay away from Westchester, though it is very nice, because the taxes are insane.

I love the beach access up there. Train ride is rough and long, but you get used to it.

Greenwich, Old Greenwich, Riverside in CT.

best schools - short commute

I would say Greenwich, it's the first town with strong schools in CT over the NY line - so taxes are lower than NY and commute is shorter than some other towns in CT (but of course if you live far from the train in Greenwich that could be worse than close to the train somewhere else in CT). Plus Greenwich has the beach. It is really lovely if you can afford it.

I, personally, don’t think I would fit socially. But more important, since the conversation initially was about child rearing, these towns are known for very rigorous and competitive high schools which is both a curse and a blessing. There are kids who would greatly benefit from an environment like this and others who would absolutely not. From my experience (my kids are in college now), for the type of kid who benefits, there are other ways to make it up, as long as the zoned HS is “good enough”. But for the other one, if there is no escape valve, it can be a disaster. The rate of learning disabilities/ special needs services in Scarsdale public schools is astonishing - many are trying to hang on by any means possible.

NYC burbs are kinda self-segregated. Scarsdale, Chappequa and Rye Brook are predominantly Jewish (though also lots of a Asians in Scarsdale). Bronxville is very Catholic. Rye and the greater Bedford area are very WASPy.

There are some that seem to have a more balanced population like Larchmont and Pelham. I don’t know much about the river towns.
