The lease on our Mazda CX-5 is ending this year. We’ve loved the car, but barely drive. We have an infant and live in DC with a small garage (the car barely fits). We’ve thought about leasing another car and thought about buying the leased car. What have other folks done in this situation? I’ve heard there aren’t many used cars in the market, and since we know how the leased car has been treated well, it’s appealing to now buy it, but I have no idea how to determine what a good price would be. My husband loves new technology in cars, so I think he’s inclined to lease another new car, but I don’t really care about that and the CX-5 we have no has more technology than I’ve ever had before and think it’s fine. I’m also not particularly keen on dumping money into an asset we won’t own. Lease payment now is about $350 with tax.
Would love your thoughts on how to decide to move forward with a decision. I’m a bit naive about car buying so very much appreciate it! |
| Leasing is almost never a good financial decision. Buy a new CX-5 or consider a new Rav4. |
| Thanks! Those RAV4s look great too. |
| Hybrid RAV 4 is an awesome car that will last you into your baby’s teen years. But the car has gotten quite chubby with the 2019 redesign. If the CX-5 barely fits, I’m not sure the RAV 4 will be any smaller. |
Thanks boglehead ! |
| Measure the garage first. Look at some of the smaller KIAs. |

Look for dealer certified, low mileage used cars coming out of leases. Especially end of year. Dealers are trying to move cars.
As said above, get exact measurements of garage then see what options you have. Definitely don't lease again. |
| You could possibly negotiate a better buyout price if you like your car. |
| Went from a Cx-5 to a Tesla model 3 (the cheaper sedan) with 2 kids. It was a great decision and would likely thrill your techy husband. One cool feature of the Tesla is that the software is updated regularly (every few weeks) so the car is constantly improve, and there is virtually no maintenance. |

I wouldn’t buy a cx5 if you’re planning to have another kid.
-mom of two with a cx5 that we never use for family trips bc the backseat is so small vs our outback |
If you barely drive then why do you care about the technology? When I drove a ton I cared more about technology because it provided comport, navigation, good ways to hook up music etc. But I can make do with spending less now that I barely drive |
I have three kids with a Cx5 and it is fine! We have a roof rack and a trailer hitch so we can put bikes on back for family trips |
| If for you, get a CX-30- new or used and buy it. If for DC, get Tesla 3. |
Probably not. She has a contract. |
| If you decide to look for something new, take a look at the Subaru Outback. When I bout a new car a couple years back, I looked at the CX5, the Honda CRV, and the Outback. I chose the Outback because of more rear leg room and have been very happy with it. It is a bit longer than the CX5 so check that it fits your garage! |
