Moving to Long Island from Bethesda MD - DD with Intellectual Disability

Anonymous
Please recommend neighbourhoods with good schools and programs for DD in 4th grade. We are house shopping and would like to be on the North Shore - Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington or Roslyn but don’t know how those school support kids with ID and if they can support her.

I think you will do well in any of those places. I grew up in Great Neck, and I know that GNPS never met a problem they didn’t throw money at. How strong of an ID are you looking at? I believe the more intensive programs are at North, but call the Special Ed office and ask. I’m pretty sure Manhasset and Port are similar.

Long Island has multiple schools excellent. But remember Long Island in Nassau county is most racial segregated by town surburb in United States. Make sure you know then.

Example
Great Neck - Chinese
Oceanside and Merry - all white. (Catholic and non practicing Jews) upper Mille class
Valley Stream, Roosevelt, Hempstead and Freeport nearly all black
Rockville, center, garden city, manhasset rich white
Five towns Orthodox Jews
Hicksville Indian
Island park - blues collar white
And so on and so on

Any school in an upper income white or Chinese neighborhood is good.

Not exactly where you want, but Plainview Old Bethpage has a good program for intellectual disabilities.
