| What needs to happen to make DC it’s own state finally? |
| It already passed the House. I think it just needs a Senate majority and a POTUS signature. |
What? |
| Never going to happen unless DC becomes solid red in terms of voting. The day that happens DC will become a state. Republicans get things done, Democrats cry about how about how mean the republicans are. |
| This has nothing really to do with Repubs. If that were true, Obama would have made it a State when he had the majorities. There is zero appetite outside of DC for this issue. |
| I think it could happen with a future Dem president + Dem majority Senate. Republicans are overrepresented in the Senate compared to the US population. I think it's becoming more and more clear that Republicans will say and do whatever they want to keep their power. Admitting DC as a state will add 2 Democratic senators and help even the playing field. |
| The constitution refers to a federal city, aka DC. If they want to be a state, give it back to Maryland. |
Obama didn’t want to burn all bridges with the GOP. Now the gloves are off. |
Neither DC nor MD want that. |
But as this forum loves stating, there is precedence. |
Then it remains a federal city. Last time I checked, Virginia took back their contribution in the 1800s, aka Arlington and Alexandria. |
Presidents Obama and Clinton already had the opportunity to do this and both thought it was not that important an issue. Dems care less about this issue than Repubs outside of DC. |
This isn’t the 1800s. |
| I love the internet constitutional lawyers. It's so cool that you can become one by reading an article on Federalist or Storefront or whatever it is these days. |
Precedence?
