We are moving back to CT after many years. We have tween and teen kids. We are deciding between
Greenwich (my dh grew up there, has family there) or Litchfield. I want my kids to make friends and in Greenwich it could be intense socially and in Litchfield it seems pretty small but slower paced, maybe less intense. But not a lot up there so they’d likely have to make friends through school as houses are acres apart. Any advice? |
There are lots of lovely, laid back areas of Greenwich. Check out Old Greenwich and Riverside. I’d take by the beach any day but Litchfield is a lovely, lovely place. |
Greenwich has a large miidle class section to it. It actually has subsidized housing developments. It is no less intense than the DMV. I vote for Greenwich because of the beaches.
Grew up in Greenwich and attended GHS. |
Greenwich is the best! So diverse. Close to NYC. Great restaurants. Great beaches. Close to everything. So many things for the kids. Amazing community resources. |
I grew up near Litchfield, and we are there a lot bc my mother still has a house up there. Litchfield is nice for a weekend home, but I would not recommend it for a regular residence. It's the boonies. I think your chances of having a regular suburban life are much greater in Greenwich than in Litchfield. Litchfield County can be pretty remote for everyday living, unless you are into horses or something like that. Also it's nice to have family close, even if your children are older. |
+1 me too. socially not intense at all. I went to GHS. I have no idea what the privates are like - I only knew of the kids who got kicked out of Brunswick Academy for drugs and ended up at the HS. |
PS. I lived there years (Greenwich) and literally never heard of Litchfield |
Greenwich, no question. |
Litchfield is beautiful beyond belief but has a very "genteel country" feel. It kind of reminds me of English country houses, whereas most people living in the country in the USA tend to be in the "wearing camo and driving a truck" crowd. However, Litchfield is a small town so they arent going to have as wide a social circle to choose from. Closest major "town" is Torrington and that's pretty small and more run down |
There are also lots of areas in between...like parts of Wilton, Weston and ridgefield have that bucolic litchfield feel but are soooo much closer to useful stuff... |
I wouldn't describe Torrington as "run down". It's working class. It is a family and community oriented town. Recent influx of Central and South American immigrants settling there, buying and rehabbing homes. It's also where all the stores are. As someone who is from the area, there are more than enough people in Litchfield County "wearing camo and driving a truck" with an American flag flying from the back. Don't let the quaint Litchfield Green fool you! |
