Best NYC or Suburban Neighborhoods for Bicycling?

Any suggestions? Must be near subway or commuter rail station. Close proximity to shopping area and also to a nicd bike path or safe road for bicycle riders.

Probably Bedford - ?

Seems like everyone bikes in Brooklyn- whether it’s safe or not, IDK.

We live on Roosevelt Island - lots of bicycling around here and nice places to picnic. Not many cars. If you drive over from queens, then just park in the motor gate garage. If you are coming in from Manhattan you can take the tram - kids love it. Shopping here is pretty lousy, although I love the Saturday farmers market.

My sister bikes a lot in Prospect Heights, but not sure how safe it is!

Oooh, I never met anyone who actually lives on Roosevelt Island! It's all big apartment blocks, right?

Yup - all big apartments. There’s really only one road so we all live on Main St - I get funny looks when I give my address as “Main St, NY, NY”. Aside from the big apartment blocks that have a Soviet vibe, it’s relatively bucolic. Lots of us at the UN or Cornell/Rockefeller/MSK, and lots of families. Beautiful views of Manhattan and the east river (watching the boat traffic is fun for kids). Gets cold in the winter. Very, very safe and very international. I’d rather be in Manhattan, but this is the housing we get, so RI it is!

Montclair and West Orange, in New Jersey, have commuter rail stations, nice shopping areas, and mountain biking trails in nature preserves.
