I have a newborn who was born at 6lbs 14oz. We left the hospital at 6lbs 7oz and at his two week appointment he was 6lbs 14oz. The pediatrician was happy he regained his birth weight but was not happy he didn’t seem to gain much else. He suggested we supplement with 1-2 bottles of formula a day. What else can I do besides that? |
Nothing. Your baby should not have gained more than that. |
Agree with PP. Two weeks to get back to birth weight is completely normal. |
You should ask your pediatrician about using a high calorie formula. That’s what we used for my premie to get her to gain weight. She chunked up fast. |
First you should listen to your pediatrician. If you don’t want to listen to your pediatrician or trust his or her advice your baby should be gaining more find another pediatrician. Second your baby gains weight when it eats. Besides breastmilk a baby can safely eat formula. So if you don’t want to feed formula find a breastmilk source. |
Yes by all means listen to an anonymous poster instead of your doctor. |
OP here. We trust the doctor and will be supplementing with formula. I was asking if there is anything else I’m addition for breastfeeding and supplementing that would help him gain weight fast. |
I would get a different pediatrician. |
That's all you can do for a newborn, is supplement with formula. You could also find a new pediatrician if you want a second opinion. |
+1 |
Why? Do you know more about infant growth than pediatricians? Does OP's doctor's advice not support the exclusive breastfeeding narrative that you would prefer to hear? Fed is best. |
Just follow the pediatrician's advice - if you needed to do anything else, she would have told you. |
Feed on a schedule. Every 2 hrs from 6am to 6pm and every 3 from 6pm to 6am. Partner gives the formula at 2 night feeds so you can sleep more. |
You can do what the pediatrician suggested. That's all. Dumbass. |
You're acting like this is unusual and your child is severely underweight. Getting back up to birth weight in two weeks is fine. Just do what the fed suggested. Or do you want someone to tell you it's ok to give your newborn like olive oil or rice cereal? It's NOT. |
