We normally live in NYC but have been staying with my parents in CT since March. I never thought I would say this but I absolutely love it. I love the suburbs, I love having a pool, I love going to the real grocery store, I love being close to the beach, I love that my kids can run outside with the neighbors. But we also love NYC and had never really thought about leaving before all this...
I know this is crazy but... my dream home is on the market. Great price, great neighborhood, great schools, just beautiful. Are we crazy to move here?? My DH barely had to go into the office before all of this and won't be going until at least the end of 2021. We'd be able to walk to the train station when the time comes. I always work from home. Will we regret this?! I kind of can't imagine not going back to live in the city but I also can imagine our lives here and it seems... peaceful. We're so torn. |
I would be crazy to do it. I need the city. I need the plays, the museums, the creativity, the faster pace, etc. I love the suburbs for a week and then I'm itching to get back. |
I think you and your partner should sit down with clear minds and really think through what moving will truly mean. It sounds like you are super excited about the relative freedom the suburbs provides compared to NYC during COVID but you don't want to make a rash decision based on seeing one house hit the market. Me and my partner plan on leaving DC next year and we are actively planning what that will look like but we are being very measured about this. |
I would already have signed the contract
All of the NYC stuff will still be in NYC if you want it. Visit when you need your fix. In a year, you will want it even less. |
Given what a hellscape NYC has turned into and how’s its even to go further down the drain, yeah, why not? Seize the day on the bourgeois burb. |
Where are you in CT? I am as well (from DC originally) and god I miss the city and all it has to offer. If you, like my husband, adore the fresh air the quiet the nature the open space, then go for it and move there. Can you tell I miss DC? |
We're in Greenwich. I miss it too! Really miss walking out my front door and having the "world" at my feet. But I also really do appreciate the quiet, fresh air, and a clean beautiful suburb for the kids. I think we probably need to wait on this... |
Do you own or rent in nyc?
How old is your daughter? |
NYC is the opposite of a hellscape right now. NYC is relaxed and gorgeous. But, for people with kids and regular schedules, who care more about having a yard than about being able to go to a play on a Wednesday evening, living in a nice, affordable suburb makes a lot of sense, even when Covid goes away. I think the real reason for families to live in NYC proper is discomfort with driving. But it sounds as if that's not an issue for the OP. So, the OP should do what feels good and look into staying in the burb. |
It's going to take a couple years for amenities like plays and concerts to seem like a good idea again. might as well lean in to suburban bliss for now and re-evaluate in a couple years. If it isn't what you thought it would be, easy enough to undo. |
I grew up in Greenwich. Excellent schools. Public and private. Better than seeing drug addicts sleeping on the side walk and giving each other BJ's in the daylight in Manhattan - which seems to be the current MO. |
LOL wut? Have you ever been to New York City? |
No, you're not crazy, especially if you have school age children. You can always come back when they are grown. |
Sweetheart I LIVED there for 5 years. Have you not picked up a newspaper / read the news online in the past month? ![]() |
+1. Why NOT do this OP? Manhattan is an hour away in traffic. Buy the house, put your kids in an amazing school, spend your weekends at the beach, and be grateful you got out of NYC. |
