Nap for 3.5 year old

Anonymous
My 3.5 year old will still happily nap for 2 hours in the afternoon. But, we are trying to figure out his nap sweet spot so he will still go to bed easily at night - he just started sharing a room with his older brother who needs a 7:30 bedtime. If your 3.5 year old still naps, what is their schedule?

Ours is the same and still goes down around 7:30-8. However! We set up his room to be totally safe for him to wonder around for as long as he wants so I know he is up for a while having downtime. I don’t know what time he falls asleep. Probably closer to 8:30 or maybe even 9? When we have him skip his nap he’s totally asleep by 7:45.

No nap. Do you want your kid to sleep 14 hours a day? Comdd Cone on.

That's tough. Mine is 4.5 but can nap for 2 hrs if I let her. We get her up by 4 at the latest so she can still have an 8pm bedtime (finish last books around 8:20).

Bedtime at 7, asleep by 7:30. Nap needs to be done by 4 at the latest, preferably closer to 3.

We pulled DD out of daycare because of the nap just after 3.5. She wasn’t falling asleep until 10pm some nights. It was a vicious cycle. For me if they can still be in bed and falling asleep by 830 I would keep the nap. Once bedtime/falling asleep time gets closer to 9 I would drop the nap.

Your 3.5yo can sleep until 4 and still be asleep again at 730?

We had to drop the nap at three for both of our boys because of their inability to fall asleep early enough at night. The morning crankiness after a short night sleep was killing us. Once they adjusted to the no nap, everything was better.

Wait... is this serious? Yes. I want all my kids to sleep 14 hours a day!!!

My 3.5 year old takes a 1.5 hour nap, falls asleep by 9 usually (8:30 bedtime), awake at 7am. Works for us.

What time is he going to bed now?

Will it cause problem if he goes to bed at 8 and his older brother goes to bed at 7:30?

Will he disturn older brother if you put them both in bed at 7:30 and he's still awake for another 30-60 minutes?

You can try to shorten nap, but this doesn't always buy you an easier bedtime or more sleep.

When my 3 yo DS naps, we let him sleep for no more than 30 minutes. I need to work in the evenings.

This was my thought too. I envy this person if it is in fact true.

Mine will be 4 in October and can nap until 6 and be in bed by 7:45/8.

This really depends on how much sleep your 3.5 year old needs. My older child took a nap right up until she started Kindergarten (and on weekends for the first half of K) and still went to bed between 7:30 and 8:00 every night. My younger child went to sleep between 9:00 and 10:00 if she took a nap starting right around 3.5 years old (but was a cranky mess if she didn't take the nap). It's a trade off - if your evenings are going to be chill, maybe just start skipping the nap.
