If you are buying a device

For virtual learning what are you getting? I have a kindergarten and 4th grade student. Neither have their own devices. In our house we have a 9 year old MacBookPro that couldn’t handle the websites and zoom calls and a 3 year old iPad Pro which can, but I need to use it regularly for my own work since my work computer does not allow me to access virtual CLEs and such.

Presuming the kids have overlapping needs to access technology, I’m guessing we need two devices. I’d prefer to stay under $500 if at all possible. I’ve never personally owned anything but an Apple product, though I use PCs from work.

My kids are at a DCPS school if that makes a difference.

Fill out the tech survey and tell them you don’t have dedicated technology for either kid. I would focus on the older child first.

I got my kids refurbished iPADs. They're $219.00/each now - it's the cheapest version and it's been fine. (My kids are 3 and 5.) I don't know anything about laptop options for the older kid.

Have the schools provide the devices.

Where did you get the refurbished ipads? My son is only in prek 4 so that sounds like a good option.

Reach out to your elementary school and ask.

They had budget starting last year for a device for every 3rd, 6th and 9th grader.... so this year every 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th grader.

Aren’t new iPads like 300 now? Get those.

A laptop is better than an ipad for distance learning. Having a real keyboard is important.

Fill out the survey, the plan is to provide devices to all kids that need them.

OP, 2 moms just posted on our school page they bought refurb'd ipads not realizing they didn't work with our technology. (Schoology, google meets) So make sure they will work w/whatever your school is using.

We bought our kids Dell laptops. They used IPads last spring and just really needed something more.

One is using an iMac. The other is using ipad for zooms and chromebook for schoolwork. We bought them prepandemic for other reasons but they have worked well.

Purchased a surface laptop for my 9th grader and a surface tablet for my 7th grader. Microsoft comes without all of the junk that other laptops come pre-loaded with. Also - work easily with teAms
