Columbia Heights with Kids?

I would love Brianne Nadeau to address the problem but her sole focus is on increasing affordable housing.

I would love for one viable candidate to run against her, not two like last time. She's the most vulnerable council member by far.

Said with such disgust. As if caring about affordable housing is a bad thing.

They said "sole" focus on increasing affordable housing. As in, it would be nice if Brianne Nadeau cared about other things as well, like people getting shot in her ward.

There is nothing wrong with supporting efforts to increase affordable housing but that isn't my primary concern right now. I am worried about the increasing number of daytime shootings. I don't like it when packages get stolen from my front porch. I want to be able to walk to the metro without having to walk around people passed out drunk. I want kids to be back in school. The list goes on. Brianne Nadeau seems to put her lofty interests above the practical, everyday issues this voter values!

I've stared looking at Columbia Heights since it's near my office and close to the school my child will attend. Is this a good neighborhood for families with young kids? Are there grocery stores and parks nearby? Thanks in advance!

CH resident here with two kids under 4. There are tons of families with kids! I'd recommend checking out the area near the restaurants on 11th. There's a small section of 14th Street in particular that is more prone to shootings (Fairmont/Girard). I walk around by myself or with my kids in CH all the time. Farmer's market right nearby on the weekend, a few great playgrounds nearby, love to be able to pop over to Target if I need something (did this way more pre-pandemic), great restaurants a two minute walk away from me. Will we move to a 'burb someday for a bigger place and a yard? Maybe. But we're content right now.

There are more families in Petworth and farther north, but that's probably because up until a few years ago you could buy a whole row-house for the price of a small condo in CH. CH is also flipper central and has been for 10 years.

Fair; bread and butter issue matter - but I think she has eyes on higher offices.

She probably does. That would be great because maybe she won't run for reelection. I would love a candidate that prioritizes the quality of life issues that make a neighborhood a great place to live. Maybe she devotes her energy to working for a non-profit which could use her skills.

What higher office could he possibly win? The thought of a Nadeau mayoral campaign makes me giggle. She would get pulverized.

Wow, very eye opening hearing what you all are willing to tolerate just to live in your million dollar DC houses.

I hope that residents will grow increasingly intolerant of the crime. It is sad that the increasing crime in the neighborhood is not even addressed. I assume that this means it is a non-issue for Brianne Nadeua.

Boy oh boy. What has happened to Columbia Heights!?? I finally had the opportunity to drive my kids into school and it’s nothing but homeless drunken looking people outside at 8am. What is going on? Furthermore, trash everywhere! What is the ANC or city government doing about this? I couldn’t believe my eyes.

CH has become really bad. We have lived in CH for 10 years and the area has really gone downhill. And the ANC doesn't care. Brianne Nadeau doesn't care. Her focus is on increasing affordable housing, not keeping the streets clean or improving crime.

What are the key factors that have caused it to go 'downhill' in the last 10 years?

For all those who regret having kids, Columbia Heights is a great place to move. Those kids won't be around for long!
