What ever happened to Crown HS?

Imagine until 10th grade they’re with their friends, then they’re bused to a brand new high school.

No. They will walk to the new school in their neighborhood, along with all of their friends in the neighborhood.

Except crown area, who’s walkable to crown high school? Certainly not most of Wootton

Typically, if you live within 2 miles of a HS, you're in the walk zone.

No nobody in Wootton is within 2 miles of crown except that triangle

Wootton will probably lose existing kids to Crown but gain kids from RM. RP kids are the closest but TB kids would offer more balance and are not that far.

no way will they pull RP neighborhood to Wootton.

My prediction: based on the current cluster maps

College Garden goes to Crown HS
Parts of QO and Wootton go to Crown
Parts of QO and GB go to Wootton HS

College Gardens will go to Gaithersburg (or at least the King Farm neighborhood) and parts of Gaithersburg will go to Crown...focusing on pulling up the demographics of Gaithersburg.

I pray this is not the way it turns out...

Looks like they are putting a STEM/IT/Bioscience focus in the school. That's great. IMO, it will be great school.

Yes it will be a great school. But if your kids are the first ones going to a brand new high school, that’s still a big impact on their future.

Huh...how so?

A brand new school needs several years to establish and also let colleges familiarize with it.

A brand new school will attract some of the best, enthusiastic teachers to join the school. Colleges don’t need to be “familiar” with it. They know MCPS and the curriculum. Kids won’t be impacted just because they go to a new school.

So naive about college admissions.

Do you have data showing how kids who go to new schools are unsuccessful in college admissions?

Most people who move to MoCo do it so their kids can thrive, not just survive. With survival as MCOS's benchmark, it's no wonder so many people are fleeing.

Where are all these fleeing people? We're still crowded in our schools.

Look at MCOS's demographics and which schools are overcrowded or underattened and it'll tell you exactly who and where the people fled from. Hint: UMC white people are leaving in droves white dirt poor Hispanics are flooding in. The problem is that those UMC white people are taking their UMC money with them.

Overcrowded schools like Churchill and WJ?

I mean sure. You'll find a few overcrowded W schools that haven't been renovated in decades. But for the most partz overcrowding is happening where Hispanic immigrants flock. And again, check MCPS demographic. Whitee is headed for greener (or more correctly redder) pastures.

It's 2.2 miles on foot from the King Farm Safeway to Gaithersburg HS, and 3.2 miles to Richard Montgomery HS. Maybe you should discuss your reluctance with that PP who keeps lying about the proportion of Montgomery County residents who believe students should be assigned to the nearest school.

Gaithersburg will not be the same school after they redistrict so any pre conceived notions are probably false.

Dp..

I don't think is accurate. If we look at HS with a high population of Hispanics:

SVHS before the redrawing of boundaries was under capacity.

https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/fy2019/schools/04104.pdf

Springbrook is also under capacity
https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/fy2019/schools/04798.pdf

Which schools have a high % of Hispanic immigrants?

That PP isn't interested in data, they're interested in stoking fear, alarm, and panic.

Indeed. Probably part of concerted effort.

And 1.9 miles to the Crown HS site.

Not true. Parts of Stone Mill and Lakewood are also within 2 miles of Crown.

PP (CGES/JW parent) here. I am fine with DS going to Crown HS if he had to and while I agree with previous poster that Gaithersburg HS wouldnt be the same in demographic sense after redistricting happens, I still dont think it will be good environment for my child. Teachers and Admin will stay the same, so policies will stay the same (and no I dont have first hand experience but plenty of second hand ones since we used to live in the area before DS become school age). And the area where the school itself is located, is not safe (known drug house across the street (my jailbird stepson got caught there twice, so yes on first hand experience); super sketchy apartments around it). HSers tend to go out for lunch, so neighborhood where the school is located becomes all of a sudden way more important that for ES/MS.
