I actually think he is doing an admirable job as Education Chair. He took over from Catania where he left off, but has a much softer style and a more liberal bent. The latest example of that was his push to stop the Department of Health from dumping nursing services on school staff. He stepped up when no one else looked they would -- including on the Health Committee where the issue technically resides.

Thanks for this info. I'll look it up.

If you're dumb enough to cast your vote for Beyonce's candidate (or Angelina's candidate or Bruce Springsteen's candidate) or any other celebrity who's claim to fame is performance and not intelligence, then you don't really deserve to vote.

It's a shame that people died to give you the franchise that you're to stupid to appreciate.

People incapable of using proper spelling should think twice before before calling anyone stupid.

You guys clearly don't know the story. Brandon Todd was offered the ability to keep funding at Shepherd and the dummy wouldn't do it. You should be mad at Brandon Todd.

How can you be mad at a log? It's practically the same thing.

Given that no monkeys are currently serving on the Council, which current Council Member or candidate do you think would do a better job than Grosso? My bet is that the most likely replacement for Grosso would be Gray. Looking forward, Trayon White might be a good candidate, but he hasn't even spent a day on the Council yet. The position really should be held by a an At-Large Member, and while Bonds, Silverman, and White are certainly capable, I don't see them filling Grosso's shoes at this point.

Hopefully the education committee will go to someone who's not so concerned with some bizarre image of being "progressive" but is actually concerned with active oversight. Colbert King at WaPo hit this straight on:

Yes he did. so sick of DC being being the experimental.progressive 1ab.... Add in the front page post expose of our craptastic youth offender laws that do nothing but enable youth repeat offenders - please, where are the council members that represent those of us that actually live here ???????

Agreed. read todays front page on the Youth Offenders act that gives a "second chance" to violent offenders which amounts to 4 or 5 chances until they murder someone. We need council to amend this so that it can only be applied ONCE. but for sure Grosso, Naduea, Silverman and Mendolson are an army of idiot lberals and I am a democrat. they are a disgrace.

Republican here. A 19 year old broke into my home and it turns out he had been arrested 5 times before for vehicle theft, drug possession, etc. He had been required to attend community service type programs but never went. We were home when he broke in.

I can't for the life of me understand why democrats keep voting for people who really don't seem to care about those of us who have been victims of crime. More poeple will be robbed, assaulted, etc. while the repeat offenders give the "reformed" juvenile justice system the finger.

If you read the Post series about repeat juvenile offenders, the law that is being utilized to gain reduced and/or light sentences was passed in the 1980s. It has been misused by DC Superior Court judges who are appointed by the US President and approved by the US Senate. The agencies charged with overseeing these offenders are federal. Serious juvenile crimes are prosecuted by the USAO. I don't see where any of the officials that DC is electing these days have anything to do with this. To the contrary, it is out of their hands. Recently Mayor Bowser created a controversy by criticizing the Superior Court for not doing its job to seek justice. It is astonishing that DC's Superior Court is not accountable to DC residents or elected officials.
