Bikes. He’s into bikes. He’s cheap AF.

What, really? How do you do a grocery run for a family on a bike? That is not an efficient use of your time, and time = money.

I could drive to the grocery store in 2 minutes or ride there in 8. Not much time difference plus you get the benefits of exercise

Acutally, there's quite a difference:
If I ride my bicycle I then have to transport groceries in a bicycle cart.

Also, I have to lock up my bicycle which takes a lot longer to do than to park a car.

So it turns 2 minutes for transport into a total of around 15 minutes each way. Which is a lot if you're just going for a gallon of milk.

And if Mr. Money Mustache wanted to do this himself, fine, but if he guilt tripped his wife every time she hopped in the car for this task (even with a look) that would get old very fast.

Are you disabled? I can lock a bike in 15 seconds and I'm parked right by the entrance. It doesn't take any longer to load groceries in a bike cart than in the trunk of a car. WTF are you talking about. The only time difference is riding time which is about 8 min round trip.

DP. Actually, the real time difference is in how much you can carry. With a car, I can shop for a full week's worth of groceries, including stocking up on anything that's on a really good sale. With a bike, I can only carry a few days worth of basics that I can fit on the bike, so not only do I have to go more often, but I may end up spending more at the store when I can only shop based on immediate need rather than value.

He doesn't work, so his time isn't that valuable. I liked his cost comparisons between grocery store prices and Costco prices.

LOL, yes he works. He calls himself retired, but he works. That blog needs to come out on schedule whether he wants to write or not, because he'll lose advertisers otherwise.

Ok, you really don't understand this at all. A bike trailer will hold more than your car trunk. The time difference is meaningless because I don't have 10 hours per day obligated to work. An extra 10 minutes of grocery shopping is no big deal plus I can go when the store is empty so I won't be waiting in line. Plus the exercise benefits. It's a no brainer

How do you tow a bike trailer and two kids?

I have started cycling to the trader joe's in bethesda rather than driving, because parking there is such a nightmare. I find I can take a weeks worth of groceries for my family of four (including two teenagers), using two panniers and a large backpack.

Wow. Just like a cheap man to manage to find a way to make grocery shopping even more of a chore

They stay with my spouse. This isn't nearly as difficult as you are making it

You really are clueless. I have never filled up my trailer with groceries

No driving to the grocery store? Deal breaker.
No meals out? Deal breaker

I admire his committment. And he showed me how to cut some of the fat out of my budget and enjoy free things more even when i don't have to.

But his whole deal seems like it would be toxic to a serious relationship.

Mrs Money Mustache left him?!?!

No. He left her

He filed and left but it sounds like she’s the one who emotionally left the marriage first.

I wonder how much she walked away with?! Or rode away with on her bike

Thank you, that made me laugh and laugh.

And to be the one who asks for divorce and still make your wife figure out how to make it happen on your tightwad budget.

Personal finance ain't about how much you make. Its about how much you keep
