Because the Night, Patti Smith version
All of Me, John Legend (I stopped the car and pulled over the first time I heard it) We Shall Overcome You are my Sunshine Something , Beatles on Abbey Road Reasons, Earth Wind and Fire |
Right now, I have been really rocking out to Let Go by RAC on repeat. It brings up happiness and sadness at the same time for me. |
Home Life, John Mayer
Ghost and History of Us, Indigo Girls If I loved you, Delta Rae Secret World, Peter Gabriel Coming around again, Carly Simon Someone Great, LCD Soundsystem Crying, KD Lang (I'm with the straight DH pp who called this one a world-stopper -- I gasped in shock the first time I heard it) |
The Indigo Girls basically own this thread. I'll throw in 'You and me of the 10,000 wars' for good measure.
Also, 'You could be happy' by Snow Patrol. I know it's not a _good_ song, but Jesus, that one just guts me. |
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World |
Bridge over Troubled Waters always gets me. My 8th teacher used to sing it to us-while playing piano, during lunch hour (we used to eat lunch in our classrooms). there are tons more but this one comes to mind right away. |
Did you know George borrowed the opening lyric from his friend James Taylor? "Something in the Way She Moves" by JT is also a pretty great song. |
Blue October -Into the Ocean. |
Anything James Taylor, mainly because I have a personal connection. |
I know you... |
The Marvelous Toy, by Tom Paxton? I actually think it's a very sweet song, sort of the opposite of Cat's in the Cradle - I do react emotionally to it, but more happy than sad. Kid gets a magical little toy from his Dad, loves it his entire life, and eventually gives it to his own son. We have a picture book version of this song, really fun to read with the kids. "It went zip when it moved, bop when it stopped, and whirrr when it stood still ... I never knew just what it was, and I guess I never will". Tom Paxton has several tearjerkers, though. Check out The Bravest, about firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 - told from the point of view of someone who was saved by them. "Now every time I try to sleep, I'm haunted by the sound of firemen pounding up the stairs while we were running down". Sends chills down my back every time I hear it. |
Adding Five for Fighting's 100 Years to my list above. And Lou Reed's Dirty Blvd. No one mentioned this song when he died and I think it is his best work. |
+1! |
Nice list! Just want to add Homesick by Mercy Me. And Amazing Grace. |
Creep by Radiohead (1992) Creep by STP (1993) Creep by TLC (1996) |
