Hey millenials turn down the volume and THINK before carrying on with this silly (and at times vicious) pity party. A lot of the laws that are in place today, most in fact, were enacted by the folks that proceeded the Boomers. The Boomers (definted as born between 1946 and 1964, by the way) are as a group by no means a monolith. I was born at the tail end and graduated college in 1982 with debt and walked into what was then the worst recession since the Depression. Sound familiar? My parents were Depression era folks and we lived modestly, not because we had to but because my parents were afraid it could all vaporize one day. In any event, tons of second wave Boomers will get screwed if the first wave cuts benefits.
Whatever happened to "we're all in this together." This generation ruckus is for the birds. And painting a group that spans 18 years is ludicrous. Lots of Boomers were 10 the summer of Woodstock, and did not attend! |
Yeah but you had plenty of time to repeal these policies, it wasn't like you couldnt stop them. If you thought for ONE second about your kids or the next generations rather than ME ME ME ME it would've prevented the lowered living standards the younger generation now must endure. |
Umm...the Boomers are not the "me" generation. A short scan through this thread proves that. In any event, Social Security is not the cause of all ills in this country. Many of the Boomers (particularly those of us at he tail end of the boom) never expected to receive an SS and have planned our lives accordingly. We have too many entitlements in this country and no one is willing to touch those programs. |
Yes, let's all get in line and collect our rations. Each and every person should get a paycheck/SS check that is the EXACT SAME AMOUNT. No more, no less. No matter if you're a lawyer, grocer, or retiree. That will solve everything. Oh, and while we're at it, let's have the government ration our food as well. Each person should get one loaf of bread, one gallon of milk, etc. per week. That way YOU can't get pissed at Grandpa if he spends his SS check on something different than what you spend your (exact same amount) paycheck on. If you want equal - then go all the way and make it completely equal. |
Baby boomer pp who criticized OP here - yes, I should say that if there is any generation I feel sorry for, it's the youngest people coming out of high school and college trying to find jobs in this economy right now. I really feel for you guys and I hope things get better. Our society needs you and we need you to be on a much firmer footing than you are now! Good luck! |
Pp here. See, you can't even grasp how your post is really all about you. I've been through some hard times in my life, some of which was caused by the generation I belong to and how the job market was affected by the previous generations. I've learned to recognize when some things have happened due to my bad luck due to current social conditions and when some things are my fault. But I don't whine about it and I don't blame millions of people I don't even know for having been lucky enough to have been born at a different time. But you don't understand the difference between recognizing your challenges and facing up to them versus whining and blaming others. That's sad. |
First of all, the US standard of living began to decline in the 1970s, before first wave Boomers ascended to power positions in the workplace and in elected office. What is happening today is not all on the Boomers, for crying out loud. It's multivariate and multigenerational. Try Wall Street, the bankers, the CEO's, companies sitting on billions of cash, lots of it parked in overseas investments, instead of hiring.
Also, are you aware how rampant age discrimination is? I know tons of second wave Boomers who are struggling because they've had to reinvent themselves due to the economy, shifts in labor demand and also not advancing as far in their careers because of first wave Boomers? Do you hear Boomers wishing millenials dead, as several people have done on this thread about Boomers, because they get passed over for millenials? I don't. Grow up. Suck it up. Go read a book on U.S. economic history and CONTEXTUALIZE. |
I'm also a member of Generation X with 2 retired baby boomer parents who are comfortable but have no additional income for luxury.
I'm baffled by the hatred of this thread toward the baby boomers and embarrassed by my fellow Gen Xers. |
Also the Boomers are cutting other Boomers' benefits, and lower benefits mean they will spend down their savings and not enjoy their retirement as much. I mean, the simplistic and sometimes flawed reasoning here makes me wonder about the quality of education in the U.S.! And don't you dare accuse me of not thinking of my children! Them's fighting words! |
Oh. It's being talked about. We are the superior generation. |
Actually they did pit in a fix. It was done in 83. It turned out not to be enough but it was a good faith effort and it did fix a big problem. |
No. WRONG. Not "control kids with money." Rather, observe, assess and act upon behavior towards others and choose not to reward bad behavior. Act like an asshole? Don't expect a gold star, a pat on the back, and a raise in your allowance. Or a big inheritance. There is a gulf miles wide between "appeasing" your parents in hopes of financial gain vs. not acting like a self-centered, entitled asshole. The apparent inability to see the difference is evidence of the lack of critical thinking and analytical skills among certain people that's been mentioned during this thread. Your logic here = massive fail. |
Can you even read? A Gen Xer brought up this conversation and it appears only two millennial have even responded. Wtf |
This makes absolutely no sense. |
Gen Yer PP you quoted. Thank you so much! |
