Too bad few people can deal with reality.

Sadder still that some people have such a distorted sense of it.

OP again...for the 5 people who actually gave me useful feedback.. Thank you!

If you have your child in a full day kindergarten program in Vienna how was the day structured? Is there time for "free play" in the classroom or extra outside playtime? I am going back and forth as to whether or not full day K is a good idea for us. Thanks!

I'm the second poster who has a child in full-day K at Marshall Road. I asked my 5 1/2 year old about their day. (I know they went over it at back-to-school night, but I don't remember.) This may be not exactly accurate but this is how she told me her day goes. When they get to school, there is a project/paper at their desk that they work on, then they do jobs (calendar, weather etc.), then rug time (morning message), reading, go to lunch, playground, specials, math, centers, snack, go home.

The children generally go outside for recess one time per day including Mondays. Centers are in the classroom. Centers are kitchen, art center, ABCs, computer, Legos, teddy bears, felt, and puzzles.

Specials are once per day. They do PE twice per week, Art once per week, Library once per week, and Computer Lab once per week (there are three computers in their classroom and then a separate computer lab for specials).

They are very open to having volunteers in or out of the classroom. You are welcome to eat lunch with your child whenever you want. I volunteer once per week and usually help in cutting out or pasting for a project that they are working on. They seem to work on a theme each week or two like pumpkins might be the theme for a week where they read books about pumpkins, measure pumpkins, etc. Thanksgiving will be the theme for a week. Winter will be a theme, etc. I know they work on writing, too - that might be in the morning after reading - not sure.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much to the MR mom! Your two posts were the most helpful to me. This was just the type of information that I was looking for. Thanks again!

Eventhough we are at a different school, our DD's day last year was very similar to 16:14 in all day K. The only thing didn't see in that post was one of our specials is music in addition to the others.

One thing we have noticed now that we are in first grade is how quickly FCPS builds up on language arts and math right at the start of first grade. I am not sure how DD would have done if she was only in half-day K. Even with full-day K we were really cranking away at sight words and reading the last 4 months.

FWIW, my child entered FCPS first grade from a half day K (private, preschool-based). No homework at all to speak of in K. She did absolutely fine academically in first. Socially was harder.

Sorry if you don't know the difference between informed opinions and conjecture.
