You reclass.

It’s an obviously made up claim that Ledecky and Huske swam locally. You’d only reclass if you were an ahole.

Ledecky holds a boatload of summer records on the wall at Palisades and writes all about that pool in her autobiography. So I'd say that's "locally."

Oh dear, woosh.

That's what I've heard about my kid's team, and my kid is saying they've offered to do it in the first meet to get it out of the way. This would be BY FAR the longest he's ever raced, and I'm not sure I endorse his "wisdom" to get it done.

My kid took the same approach when he was 10. Turned out to be much less of a boogeyman than expected. They swim 500 warmups all the time so just takes practicing a few times at race pace to get the hang of it. This is usually done in shorter intervals like swimming 4 or 5 100s at the same pace with a short rest between each.

High school meets (and college dual meets) is basically the only time the 500 free is interesting to watch. The lead can change multiple times. It wasn’t my favorite event, but I wasn’t bad at it so I had to swim it sometimes in high school and even once in college that I can remember. My best times were from swimming it at dual meets because it would always be a close race and I could hear the crowd, which pushed me more than swimming it at a random USS meet.

And yes, they think of it as 5x100s which kids do all the time at practice it’s not so bad. I liked that I had time to think and strategize during the race, unlike a 50 or 100 where it’s over in a blur. But I was a true middle distance swimmer (best event was 200 in my stroke). Hated the 1000 and 1650 free those are for the true distance people.

+1 Our school's swim team is a no cut sport.

I think this would woosh over most of us -- care to explain your inside joke?

Check page 6 of this thread. Someone ridiculously called my (true, factually supported) “an obviously made-up claim” .

For my kid's school it's 1:02. And yes, there will be cuts to get down to 30 girls, and yes some kids who swim club will be cut.

1:02? Is this a local school - that seems very fast.

Good 10 and 11 year olds are swimming that fast so it doesn't seem like an unreasonable cut for high schoolers to me.

Ha. 1:02 is a fast cut for high school girls. It’s faster than BB for 15-16 year old girls.

I have boys who swim club as well as high school. 1:02 is very fast for a 10 year old. I bet there are fewer than 2-300 10 year olds in the country who are swimming 1:02 or faster.

A 1:02 in SCY is a B time for a 15-16 year old girl.

BB time isn’t fast. If you have a BB time as a 15 year-old girl, you aren’t cracking an A meet on our mid-tier summer league team.

Yes. Some teams just make the Freshmen do it.

Thanks

Speak for your mid-tier summer league team. Especially when it comes to the 100 free, when six girls are needed.

How about my mid-tier division, which had 22 of 33 girls faster than BB.

Or the next division down, 17 out of 31. Or the next division down, 19 out of 32.
17/34, 18/33. I could keep going but why?

Were you looking at the boys’ standard? For 15-16 year old girls, the 100 free SCY B time is 1:08.79. The BB time is 1:03.79.
