Montgomery County - What Happened?

Too much focus on nonsense, not enough on real education. Allowing illegal immigration doesn’t bring jobs and lowers safety, especially for women. The area can’t even keep any luxury shopping, unlike tysons or even city center. It’s beyond me why anyone would want to be here as a business owner. So many better options. We’ll make our millions here and happily move to another jurisdiction in retirement.

As someone who fled an Islamic regime that oppressed women and forced them to wear veils, it’s beyond disturbing to me to see more and more of them walking around. So sad to see young girls forced to cover themselves and see others applaud it based on diversity. You really are a naive bunch. Those of us who fled a revolution know what is and isn’t voluntary.

Yeah, why is that? Did notice some walking around. Is there a mosque close to that area?

Does that mean online school ratings are phony?

Given that federal salaries aren’t keeping up with inflation, and DOGE cuts, we are going to wish we were 20th in a couple of years. Face it, we’ve had decades of one party incompetent leadership. It won’t change until the incumbents all go and the political system becomes more competitive.

All fluff and no data.

Federal salaries never keep up with inflation, never.

It won’t change until we get rid of Frumpy.

Just leave I don’t understand people like you that stay in a place they don’t like.

I got to you, didn’t I? What’s the fluff? The inflation data that you agree with? Are the Doge cuts fake? Maybe the fall in MoCo’s rankings? Do you think the fact that it never keeps up with inflation might mean it’s not all Trumpys fault but lack of diversity in the economy? Do you know how to argue? What I don’t understand is people who move to a county and don’t try to improve anything and pretend it’s great.

No, you didn’t get to me, honey. You are just blustering about nothing that is back to my data.

I’m not sure how Montgomery County government is involved in DOGE, can you explain that to me?

It doesn’t keep up with inflation because of the stability and our retirement and healthcare. People are willing to give up money for comfort.

I’ve lived here my whole life believe me it is way better than the 70s 80s and 90s.

I don’t understand why people come here and complain when there’s nothing wrong.

DP. You don’t seem to understand how the economy works. Whether the county government had anything to do with DOGE is irrelevant. The effects of DOGE still weigh on the county’s economy. In addition, it doesn’t matter why federal salaries lag inflation (or wage growth in the broader economy). It just matters that they do.

Housing prices are falling. Rents are dropping. People ARE leaving.

You do understand that it was County leadership’s decision for a long time to treat the County like a bedroom community for federal workers and not worry about spurring business growth and getting more non government jobs,
right? Every other county in the area and DC has done a much better job at attracting businesses. And all of these politicians in these other counties are Dems, not MAGA.

Well now with the DOGE cuts and the NIH cuts it is going to really drive home how idiotic these policies are. Most of the county funding will need to come by raising income taxes and property taxes on homeowners and residents - a lot of them feds who can’t afford it - because of the county’s inability to grow alternate revenue streams, namely from business taxes and taxes generated by robust private housing and retail development. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Also, Maryland and MoCo are anti-business, pro-tax jurisdictions. It would defy logic for any major business operation to stand up operations in MoCo.

The County Executive and Council have implemented sanctuary policies that prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

That is not true. They have implemented policies that follow the constitution. Under Obama, he was able to for relationships between ICE and moco police so ICE could deport criminals (not preschool teachers) and not violate the constitution. Obama deported more immigrants from MOCO than any other president.

Thank you! Obama was deporting people left and right and no one here said anything about ICE being Nazis back then and it was a much nicer county. Bring Obama and Homan back. We need Dems back that are hard line on immigration.

It wasn't a "hard line", they deported violent criminals. That's not hard, it's what Dems have done for decades. It's not complicated. R's defund ICE in dem areas, blame dems and idiots believe them.

If you think Obama and his man Tom Homan were only deporting criminals you are a special type of naive…

Well said. The majority of the council has mostly pursued bailing out people who made bad land deals with subsidies as its economic strategy. Not only has the county’s economy failed to grow, but the cost of these decisions will be disproportionately borne by individual homeowners.

Ha! The monthly MoCo bashing on DCUM.
It wouldn't be DCUM without it.

Racists like YOU hate it? Yes please! Yes you’re racist. Your mother lied to you, you’re a bad person.

A lot of cope and deflection but no answers. Why did it slip from the richest county in the country to poorer than Calvert County and Stafford County?

I’ve noticed a trend on this board from people that are in north Virginia. They seem to have an inferiority complex about MoCo. People in MoCo rarely think about NoVa or post about it but people from there seem to be obsessed with Montgomery county. It’s truly a mental illness.

They do.
The whole area is obsessed with MoCo

Obsessed or sick of Marylanders creating traffic jams on our smaller roads so they can commute to jobs here that Dems destroyed in MoCo?

Anonymous wrote:Montgomery County had the highest median family income out of any county in America with more than 20,000 residents in the 1980s. It was close to the top in the 70s as well.

Now it’s ranked 20th, with 5 counties in NoVa in front of it. What has changed since the 1980s and can it change course?

Fairfax and Montgomery counties, the Washington area's two most affluent suburbs, are also the two richest large counties in the nation, according to a new compilation of data by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Four county equivalents called boroughs in oil-rich and high-priced Alaska have even higher median household incomes, the bureau said, but none of them has more than 20,000 residents. The highest is Bristol Bay, Alaska--median income $33,516, population 1,094.

The rankings, published in the Census Bureau's new County and City Data Book, come from the 1980 census.
Fairfax and Montgomery were also at the top of the county income heap in the 1970 census. At that time, the rankings were compiled according to median family income and placed Montgomery slightly ahead of Fairfax.

In the new data, incomes are given for households, including not only families, which the census defines as married couples and their children living at home, but also unmarried couples, roommates and singles.

By this reckoning the median household income for Fairfax is $30,011, more than a thousand dollars above the $28,987 reported for Montgomery. However, Montgomery is still slightly ahead of Fairfax in median family income, $33,702 to $33,173

Judging from the amount of southbound traffic on the American Legion Bridge in the morning rush hours and on weekends before Christmas I’d say that you’ve got this completely backwards. If that bridge was out of operation for a month Maryland would go bankrupt and their residents would storm the County Council. The only people in Virginia who’d be upset would be kayakers.

What a sad state of affairs. The capacity of that bridge has become the primary limiter on the county’s growth. Developers don’t build housing here because you can’t send too many more cars across that bridge.
