A few data points do not drive up medians. They can drive up means but not medians. |
That totally explains things. Those darn Asians with their cash only businesses. So clever. |
The title says Rich Applicants, not Full Pay. Yes, you can say that rich and full pay probably overlap, but saying "full pay matters" signals something else. |
House poor? |
And those "higher abilities" likely come from their life benefits since prior to birth. A parent who didn't drink, ate well, got prenatal care, etc while pregnant. Once born, great medical care, parents who read to kids daily, actively engage with them and help brain development, good schools (where there are not troubled kids distracting the teachers and other students), to the expectation that school is your job and you will do well and go to college, tutors as needed, supplemental academics and enrichment year round (no summer slide), etc. Those have a much bigger impact than SAT test prep in HS. |
No one likes to admit that culture, values, and personal choices matter. |
How will that impact drugs and overdosing in college? My kids can only compete on Test Scores and Full Pay. We are Over Represented Minorities. |
You're putting too much stock in the SAT. It's all based on test preparation. That's it. Some posters try to romanticize the poor (Asian or Indian) immigrants who self study for the SAT. False. The South Asian and Asian culture is rampant with test prep cram mills. The kids all prep for these exams via test prep services. Yes, the UMC households can afford test prep, but it doesn't negate the fact that Asian households- regardless of income- use test prep services extensively. |
NP. If it were all based on test prep, there wouldn't be so many UMC and wealthy families advocating for test optional. More would have high scores. |
Eh, the kids still need to actually want to do the test prep and many won't even if it's provided. |
This is not true. There is more peer reviewed research supporting the validity of standardized testing than there is for global warming or the big bang. Particularly at the high end of of the scale, test scores are particularly useful in predicting college academic performance. https://opportunityinsights.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/SAT_ACT_on_Grades.pdf Those cram mills that you refer to so derogatorily are improving the students' cognitive ability. |
How much of that is attributed to ED? |
I am not worried about it because there aren't many of these mods to make a difference. |
Yes, some Asians are cheating to portray themselves as poor to get questbridge and financial aid. |
You can squeeze lemonade out of a rock. No matter how much you test prep, there’s a wall for everyone. We all know people who invest in test prep who can’t get past upper 1300s. They don’t have the academic foundation. The Asian students you’re speaking of probably have strong academic foundations. |
