Yeah, the problem I had with the show is they never really convinced me that Ginni would be with him. I get that he has money, and maybe he was more romantic than guys her age. But all of her friends were not coupled up and she tried to come across it first that she was really into fluidity blah blah blah. And he was super messy with a teen daughter and an ex-wife? I just don’t buy it.

Like why would she get with this older dude and want to hang out his friends? It just wasn’t a convincing relationship to me. And it made no sense that after only a few months, she would’ve done the parents weekend. I also didn’t get that she was a dental hygienist! They should’ve made her the Pilates, instructor or something. It just didn’t track with her friends that she would be a dental hygienist. That’s kind of a working class job and she clearly comes for money as do her friends.

But I will say I did really love the show. It kept me hooked for sure.

This is a good analysis and brings up a lot of good questions. All that said, Ginni was a complete good sport and very blameless in all of it. It's really hard to find fault with her or her relationship (even if it wasn't fabricated in an all that convincing manner!). They certainly shed her in a very good light. But it does make the most sense that Nick starts to go on her vacations and separate from his group a bit.

I thought their relationship was realistic. Steve Carrell is really hot for an older guy, and he had a lot of money and was super into her. She made the point that the young guys she dated were not caring at all -- I can see a woman in her early thirties just being really exhausted by the perpetual adolescence of the guys her age. Picking a guy that's more like 40 is more common (I know sooooo many 40 year old guys who married 30 year old women!), but Steve C at 55 looks more like 45. Did you see him with his shirt off? He's one of those guys that looks better at 55 than he did at 35.

I see why she was interested in him butI just disagree that she would be that serious about him. Agree, he looks good and fit and he’s rich, but putting up with that weekend with her daughter and the ex-wife? They also alluded that Nick was a serial cheater. She seems like a really good person and I think she would’ve just picked up that he’s not a great guy. I think they kind of trying to have it both ways with Nick and that fell flat for me.

I also found it interesting that she was pregnant. At the end of the day, Nick was so happy because he was trying to get his carefree youth back with this carefree young woman. But nine months from now, she’s not going be a carefree young woman. She’s going be exhausted and obsessed with breast-feeding and nap schedules like all new moms.

And that’s the problem. You really can’t go back no matter how hard you try. Just like youth is fleeting, trying to recapture it by dating a younger woman is just as fleeting cause you’re just going to end up back where you started from only a lot more exhausted.

So I did really appreciate that part of the story. I do find it hard to believe that she was that naïve that she thought she was going to have some fairytale ending with Nick when she had the baby. I just think young women today are smarter than that.

But I liked the show. It was really funny and I really like the dynamic between Jack and Kate and I loved Danny.

My favorite scene was when Kate and Jack were in the car, realizing they had to go to therapy and freaking out about it. Thought that was really well done.

Would the gay black guy really have spent all his vacations with a bunch of boring white heterosexuals? Seems unlikely.

It wasn't horrible; there were some funny scenes, but I had to completely separate it from the original film and consider it on its own (otherwise, it wouldn't hold a candle).

Most disappointing was the Tina Fey and Will Forte dynamic. Their situation was painfully accurate, but felt like a missed opportunity for these 2 talented comedians to be playing a pathetic bickering middle-aged couple.

Agree that the gay couple felt a little too campy/cliche.

Let's hear it from my Beacon peeps! (And good luck to your kid at Vassar!)

I liked it a lot. Steve Carrell is a really talented actor -- makes me a little sad he stayed on the office as long as he did, where I think his talents were kind of wasted. I was a little frustrated with the Tina Fey/Will Forte dynamic -- I really wanted her to be nicer to him. (My spouse is something of the opposite of a Will Forte, and I think I felt jealous of her being with this dopey sweet guy who just wants to do nice things for her even if he isn't super competent all the time.) And the young GF did a really good job being charming and giving her character some depth.

Now I want to watch the original. I absolutely ADORE Alan Alda, and have since I was about 4 years old.

About an hour after I saw it, I suddenly thought of a really sticky legal and/or ethical problem that the ending poses. I dont' want to say it outright, because I don't want to spoil the ending, but those of you who saw it might be able to guess what I'm thinking. What a mess!

Yes! It will depend. Hopefully, he worked with professionals who put that in as a matter of best practice. That could be one of the themes in season 2.

Can you explain what you mean here? I’m really confused and I’ve seen the whole thing.

If they are his best friends, sure. But you're right, his fashion and personality do make that likely to be not his best option.

I feel like a lot of the negatives of this series (which I loved) were carry overs from this being a re-make.

The pregnancy was kind of over the top.

Anne would have looked a little better.

The daughter's play was very 1980.

Hacks this season is not as good as prior seasons. I’m giving it up.

Pitt was good throughout.

I so agree with you on this. I really loved her in 30 Rock, but always find her so distracting in everything else. I think she's obviously a brilliant writer, but...

I randomly watched A Haunting in Venice on a plane ride last week, and she almost ruined that movie for me. Cannot for the life of me understand why she was cast in that role!

I find Tina Fey a bit chirpy - LOVE the actress who played Ann.

I also found the pregnancy unrealistic / felt it didn't fit overall. I wouldn't be as excited about that part of Season 2 if there is one.

Agree with your last paragraph, that was hilarious and perfect.

To another PP, I think that's why Danny kept referencing their other group of friends. Otherwise sometimes they felt a bit forced here, like why that couple came to parents weekend (vs the regular trips that did look fun).

Some nice moments but overall fairly mediocre with tired stereotypes and trite jokes. I give it a B-

Tina Fey is not a good actress.
Steve carrel as Nick was good but he’s sort of a one to two note actor. I would like to see him stretch more.
Ann was great and I think she was purposely made a little clueless about her bad haircut and older lady clothes.
Ginny was also a good actress but they sort of wrecked her character with her friends who were flat stereotypes

The gay couple- too campy and stereotype ish.

The play- ridiculous and they could have delivered that message in a funny but more realistic way.

In the original movie, Nick was kind of an aging hot guy clinging to his youth and his pregnant girlfriend was a sexy young woman who filled his need to be younger. They portrayed the pregnancy as an accident as kind of a cautionary tale of when older guys get with younger women and unintentionally get a second family.

In the original, Ann was a hippy dippy weirdo played by Sandy Dennis. She was portrayed as kind of stuck in life and unable to understand why her husband Nick was unhappy in the marriage. Even her friends could not stand her and barely tolerated her.

I really don't understand Tina Fey's appeal. She reminds me of a heh-heh mediocre girl in chemistry class who sometimes tells jokes.

I adore her. Love her writing and producing. I find her smart and funny and relatable. Such a contrast with the many divas and botox addled weirdos in Hollywood.

He seemed like a pos. Cheating on his wife multiple times, leaving her at the altar, and almost guaranteed he was cheating with Ginny during the marriage. I had zero sympathy for him, but I did for Ginny. I wish it didn’t end that way, but I called it to my husband. So trashy to be *that* woman, having his kid while his other is already mid college. Yuck.

This is on our list to try, it just came out today. Anyone want to give it a shot with me? It's Steve Carrell and Tina Fey.

Six old friends head for a relaxing weekend away only to learn that one couple in the group is about to split up. The three couples, Kate and Jack, Nick and Anne, and Danny and Claude, are completely upended by the news. Over the course of a year, we follow the friends on four vacations, and watch how this shake-up affects everyone’s dynamic -- sending old issues and new bubbling to the surface.

Isn't this the plot of The Big Chill?

It is similar, but in The Big Chill they are together for a week for a funeral because their college friend committed suicide. The plot goes back and forth between extreme sadness over the death and discussions about the dead friend and reconnecting in their relationships.

Also, this is a re-make of a movie that pre-dated The Big Chill.
