Humans can do non automatable jobs. Humans should not be killing themselves for an economic farce. |
Their other main demand is no automation. Can't complain about risk and difficulty if you are insisting on no robotic help. Longshoreman are very well paid. You aren't including overtime, bonuses or profit sharing. |
Yes, move those longshoremen to union manufacturing jobs, rebuild USA's manufacturing base, and charge tariffs on exporters like China and Bangladesh who don't pay a decent wage, so the can't dump their product at a lower price than made in USA. Reduce pollution from shipping. |
Longshoreman get paid a lot more than union manufacturing workers. How much more are you willing to pay for everything? Do you like being able to get fresh fruits and vegetables in winter? |
I don't see how shutting down the ports and stopping all trade to the Eastern seaboard a few weeks before a national election advances the interests of glorified forklift operators who are already making six figures. And these workers have already been offered a 50 percent wage increase, which they rejected. In a few days, it will be impossible to find fresh fruit in more than half the country. And that's just the beginning. Stopping nearly all trade is going to have rapidly cascading effects that are going to impact every human being in the United States - from food shortages to a big spike in inflation to job losses as the economy grinds to a halt. And to choose to strike just weeks before people vote effectively hands the election to Trump and the GOP. Harris and Democrats have no chance in these circumstances. I'm not sure why unions think they're going to get a better deal with Republicans in power. If anything, the Longshoremen Union have made a very compelling case for why we need to accelerate automation in the ports. It should not be possible for a few thousand well-paid union members to impact the livelihoods and well-being of every American while actively throwing a national election to Donald Trump and the GOP. This democrat stands with the robots now. |
No, who cares? What's your point? How is this relevant? |
What do you do for work, love? |
It isn't the democrats who are opposing this strike or the suggested salary demands. |
There are already laws on the books that are currently not being enforced! I do get to claim the truth. https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/12/politics/ice-workplace-raids/index.html |
What's worse - Biden mentioning collective bargaining yesterday or both sides meeting last week for the first time since June? |
I don't agree about the tariffs. Maybe we just close the ports so the goods can't come in - ha. But definitely rebuild US manufacturing, and at the quality it was in the 1980s. Yes I'll pay more and buy less. |
Since JUNE?? |
Yep.
"The two sides in the dispute have not met since June, and as of now, no talks are scheduled." https://abc7ny.com/post/longshoremens-association-ila-strike-tri-state-area-braces-possible-could-impact-14-east-gulf-coast-ports/15374386/ |
