As simple as this statement is.....this poster hits it on the head. I won't go too much into my background, but you can read between the lines. For every club, a scout has to watch 2 age groups. The U17s and U19s, a portion of the U17s are too early to recruit and a portion of the U19s have already been recruited. This tells me that ENCL is laser focused on making the college coach's life easier and the results are that he/she can see more recruitable players across more clubs.

How is that easier and a better option for college recruiting than MLS Next tournaments and showcases?

Parents will still be pushing for their DC to play up on older teams. Or ECNL coaches will bring younger players up to fill gaps or to build a stronger team for various reasons. This move won’t change that and college coaches will still have to watch different age groups as they always have.

Please remember that ECNL started with the girls side, and has only recently expanded into the boys. For girls, the recruiting cycle is mostly done by the start of senior year of HS. The most sought after players will have committed to a school during the summer between Sophomore and Jr. years, with the rest happening during the Jr. year and pretty much all (including highly academic D3) finishing during the summer between Jr. and Sr. years.

This means that, by the time a coach is showing up to scout a U18/19 ECNL showcase game, all the obvious players have been spoken for and the coach is going there to: 1. watch a player they have already recruited to make sure they are still developing; 2. Going to see a player that could fill a spot opened up by current player injury/player quitting/player transferring; or 3. Going to see one of those rare diamonds in the rough who were playing in NPL/E64/rando league and made the jump to ECNL as a Sr.

Unlike boys, most girls are no longer growing dramatically after their Jr. year, so there's less physical development to keep track of.

Also remember that coaches are responding to literally hundreds of emails they get for every single showcase. Each email has a link to video, and the grading of video is usually given over to an assistant coach. Coaches then take the grade given to the video by the assistant, then build out a schedule of games they can get to and how far apart the games are. This huge volume means the focus goes on where most of the fish are, and that's the U16 and U17 groups. For P4 top programs, coaches are going or sending assistants to the games played by sophomores so they can figure out who they will call on June 15. For most, it's that U17 group where the action is. This is where the majority of uncommitted players are that can ALSO accept a phone call or text! Finally, coaches try to hit a few 18/19 games for kids whose video really jumped off the screen.

Just because they are the mighty MLS doesn't mean that their U17 players magically all graduate in a single year. they don't. MLS has the exact same issue as ECNL. No doubt they will follow suit now that USYS and ECNL has streamlined and gotten rid of the trapped player mishap. However. MLS is less focussed on college recruiting, more on pro where graduating year doesn't matter. But MLS next...

The USYS has officially changed the cutoff date from 12/31 to 8/31?

Then how is MLS Next still using Jan 1 to Dec 31?

This is a Crazy statement to say MLS Academies and MLS Next is going to follow ecnl lead
Especially since college recruiting doesn't prioritize ecnl over MLS Next in the least

Honestly tried to figure out what big announcement was on my own from vacation, but I didn’t see anything on ECNL’s website. Scrolled through this chain and all I saw was a twitter post that isn’t from ECNL. Was there actually an announcement?

When did college coaches/recruiters not know the graduation of the players they're interested in?
Are you inventing a non existent problem to fit your narrative?

Look you clearly don't understand the issue which coaches find annoying. When a coach goes to watch a game, the 22 players they are watching on the field are not all eligible for a single recruiting class that coach may be focussed on filling. From a pure logistics perspective, that is just overall a PIA for coaches as it means cross referencing roster or do unnecessary follow up work that wouldn't be necessary if every player on the field was eligible for the same recruiting class. It's been a problem in need of a solution for a while. Unnecessarily complex for leagues like ECNL where the focus is primarily on college recruiting vs. pro. This willl streamline.

Nonsense!
College coaches aren't showing up blind at a field and trying to find a player.

They show up already knowing who they're coming to watch.
If someone previously not on their radar stands out, they simply ask the team for information on the player.
