Do you bring food when staying at a resort?

Anonymous
I would bring hoagies if there’s a fridge. The GW food is vile—it isn’t worth getting carry out from the on-site place. You will feel ripped off even if you’re rich.

Or just drive into town.

Breakfast is easy - cereal or oatmeal packets with sliced banana, or bagels and cream cheese. Lunch can be PBJ or cold cut sandwiches with chips and fruit. Apples, clementines, baby carrots, cheese sticks, granola bars, and/or mixed nuts for snacks. Buy and shred a rotisserie chicken or two before you go, and you can eat that over a bag salad or in tortilla wraps with salsa and shredded cheese (microwave).

Are you talking about the truly destitute and unfortunate who have to pack snacks when staying at a luxury resort? GTFO. Most of the people I know who do this are just total cheapskates. They pack a suitcase full of frozen Costco muffins to be eaten in the morning b/c they are too cheap to buy the breakfast. They aren't broke or to be pitied.

Where did you read “luxury” resort?

Because it's a resort and OP said it's a bit of a splurge. Where did you read that it was a 1 star hotel with no frills and BYO food?

It’s a Great Wolf Lodge and it’s all I can do this year for my kids before they head to their dad’s for the summer. I’m sorry that I want to do something special for them but can’t afford to pay the ridiculous prices for the food offered there. I can’t believe this is offending you so much that you have resorted to insulting me so harshly. What’s it to you? Why do you care what we eat? What’s “gross” about making sandwiches in a kitchenette? YOU are the gross one here, getting your rocks off insulting someone trying to make a nice weekend for her kids with what she has. I’m done reading this thread because it’s upsetting. I don’t think there is anything “gross” about what I plan to do, and I know my kids will have fun and that’s all that matters. I came for advice, not judgement.

Calm down. If you can go this resort you aren't destitute in an unimaginable situation.

I never said I was, you are saying that. I budgeted for the lodging and the experience, but I’m spread thin, so I was looking for food alternatives. I’m on a fixed income and I can’t just afford to drop $100 a night on dinner. Leave me alone, seriously. Please.

Well you posted here. On DCUM. You want sunshine and rainbows blown up you know where try posting somewhere else.

We once spent more on 3 nts of accommodation than we usually spend for a week. For a good reason though. To be w/our DD in each evening and have it feel like a family vacation, even though she needed to work during the day. Just let the family know ahead of time the budget, and the reason.

Please tell me you're not eating tuna in a hotel room. That has got to smell awful. Some of you are beyond cheap.

OP here. See, I’m glad I asked! Such an helpful, obvious answer I hadn’t thought of. We will have a fridge and I will do this exactly, rolls and maybe even a bagged salad. The restaurant has carry out so I may do this both nights and we can eat on the patio.

OP you are just gross.

Who does this?..

Feed your kids at the restaurant or leave the premises but this is absolutely absurd

If you can not afford this don’t go.

PP ease up that’s harsh. Whether it is a five star hotel or a courtyard, always always travel with food. I can afford whatever and it bugs me to pay $50 for breakfast when I just want coffee and a muffin. OP bring some food and eat offsite for dinner if you can. Team Mac and cheese cups!!

I do bring some food but NOT to save on expenses. There are a lot of foods that at some places I simply cannot consume, so I bring a small amount of food I know I can eat. Usually the hotel staff and chef are accommodating ahead of time, and I'll send the food direct.

When we’re on vacation, part of the vacation is eating out together. I do get a little jaded when it comes to hotel/resort breakfasts. $25 for two eggs, lukewarm potatoes and coffee is a bit much for me.

Having snacks for breakfast and lunch is completely different than cooking dinner in a hotel room. Sure give the kid cereal you brought from home. That’s normal. Bringing appliances to cook dinner is not. Just get an Airbnb at that point.

Great Wolf has terrible food. It’s so bad. If this is the one in Williamsburg there is a chicknfila and ihop nearby. Both would work for dinners.

While I like nice hotels, sometimes a Hampton Inn is perfect. The breakfast is nothing to brag about, but all I need is a muffin or cereal/oatmeal and a cup of coffee and juice. If on vacation, chances are we are eating pretty good for lunch and dinner. There is usually no need for a big breakfast. Breakfast at a resort or nicer hotel can easily reach over $100 for four people…no thanks.

If it’s great wolf lodge, can you maybe just send one parent out for takeout? It’s not just the refrigeration for me it’s not having anywhere to eat, plates, etc etc. I don’t want to perch on a bed and eat.

This is old intel from when I had a travel job but courtyard by marriot has the best cheap breakfast in the genre.

Absolutely, partly for budget but especially because I feel sick if I eat multiple restaurant meals a day. Even with healthier choices, it generally has more fat/sugar/salt than I’m used to.

Mostly breakfast and lunch in, then dinner out.

That must be insanely old intel. They're one of the only cheap places that acharge for breakfast that's mediocre at best. Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, etc, all have free breakfast.

There are little tables in the room. Grab some paper plates. We were just at GWL and lots of people came in with coolers. I believe she said she was a single parent. It would be far easier to pack food than run out for take out.
