WVU

Direct admit to selective program with lots of Merit aid.

Super excited DC, super proud parents.

Congrats—my neighbor goes there and he loves it!

Thank you! ♥️

It’s been a long haul with lots of explaining to unsupportive family members and HS faculty (not to mention not any love from DCUM, but that one’s Ok!). It wasn’t initially on DC’s radar but they loved everything about the visit and application process. The school did everything they said they were going to, on time and friendly, encouraging not pushy. Love the school that loves you!

Hope others find that match. Congrats to all!

Go Smithy. Have a friend's who's daughter is deciding between Smith W&M and UMD

My current junior DD adored Smith on our tour, and has the stats to throw her hat in the ring for ED, but there’s no way we could afford it even if she did get in.

Now hunting for similarly academic schools that offer merit aid. She particularly liked the decentralized housing and dining systems at Smith.

This was my thinking during junior year. But it turns out that SLACS, and especially those with large endowments, often give a lot of money. In our case, those schools gave more than the big state schools with merit scholarships. A pleasant surprise! All of this is to say that you may want to apply and see what you get from
Smith.

Which School? ED or RD?
Did they visit?
How happy is your child to be enrolling there, scale 1-10?

Can anyone share their results for slightly lower-stat more "average" students?

My DS is going to Loyola MD. He’s a 9/10 excited to go. Current gpa is around 3.1 from a Catholic HS. No test scores.

If she's open to California schools, Scripps could be a great fit! Slightly different housing/dining system but similarly strong dorm culture. Gives tons of $$$.

Also accepted at Penn State and Delaware
4.02 wgpa from FCPS, 1300 SAT, 4 APs, going to major is business/accounting.

Merit from anywhere?

Nothing from Penn State and JMU. He got offered $12,000 merit scholarship per year from Delaware, but that would still keep their OOS cost of attendance pretty high at about $40,000 per year. Manageable for us, but I am glad that he chose in-state JMU!

Thanks for the rec—she’s definitely anxious to get away from the east coast, so I’ll suggest she take a look!

In their info session, Smith said specifically they don’t offer merit scholarships. And we make just a bit too much to get any financial aid.

I think Vassar, her other favorite, will be the same.

Smith said at our info session that they do offer a few merit scholarships. I specifically asked if a kid could get need and merit aid combined, and they said yes. Another parent told me the merit scholarships don't amount to much. I do know the bulk of their aid is need.

Why not Dartmouth?
Dartmouth is too rural, too greek, too cold too small. BC was the right fit and she was awarded Presidential Scholarship to Business School.

Smith is need aware but seems to be fairly generous with financial aid. They offer grants instead of loans. I would at least talk to them.
