Shouldn't university be free for some students?

It’s certainly free in every developed country. In undeveloped ones, no.

:applause:

I needed this, thank you.

Kids are expensive. Why not just make everything free? Why stop at college?

College is expensive. When nobody’s having kids anymore because it’s too expensive to raise them you’ll be shaking your head wondering why.

Parents are supposed to pay for college. The entire financial aid system is based on this idea. It has been this way for a loooong time.

Which is wrong. Why is an adult supposed to pay for another adults' stuff

Sure however everyone here should know this before having kids.

You are awfully sheltered. Kids have no control over who they are born to.

Sheltered? People who have kids should expect the associated costs including college.

Why are we constantly obsessing over what blacks went through and now all of a sudden hundreds of years later putting them constantly on this pedestal of victimhood? It’s getting old.

What's gotten old to me is constant attempts to liken discrimination to slavery, and thinking that 250 years of slavery plus 100 years of Jim Crow can be undone in 50 years.

Were you there? Your failure in life due to history? This whole thing is so old. No I am not white.

Same poster you responded to--Yes, if people are enslaved for centuries and held back by legal means and nooses for another, their ability to succeed might be impacted well beyond a time when means are put into place to correct those previous atrocities. Your race and mine are irrelevant for understanding that.

Japan, Korea, Vietnam were all totally destroyed with wars, and became the poorest countries in recent history.
Most of the Asian immigrants came to this country with nothing much and challenged with language/cultural barriers and discrimination.
Similar stories with Irish, Jewish, and many Europeans.
I don't buy that a kid born in the 21st century is entitled to some kind of special treatment because of events in history.

Slavery happened. It was wrong.

Taking land from Native Americans happened. It was wrong.

Women were not allowed to vote until the 20th century. It was wrong.

Immigrants were mistreated. It was wrong.

BUT, at what point do people STOP claiming victimhood and get on with their lives?

The idea of Reparations is stupid.

Wherever they go, whether it's a highly selective or your local state school, why not just pay for the education of these students, regardless of SES?

No, because if it is free than it won't be as appreciated. You need to have some "skin in the game". Even if it is at reduced fee you have to pay something.

Your "skin in the game" is sweat equity. You have to go to class, study, and then prove you learned something on exams or on papers. You pay with time and effort. The idea that you should have to pay up front for the opportunity is actually what perverts the whole process. Because then you wind up with students who feel entitled to their degrees, to good grades and professional opportunities because they (or rather their parents, who also get entitled) paid a lot of money to be there.

College is not a good in and of itself. Without the student working hard to acquire knowledge and skills, college is nothing but a rubber stamp. If you just make it an expensive rubber stamp available only to rich people, you don't wind up with an educated, skilled workforce. You wind up with a bunch of whiny, entitled people who think they should get a reward for showing up, plus a bunch of angry people who are locked out of good jobs because they couldn't afford the rubber stamp.

College should absolutely be free. It's an opportunity, not a prize.

That already exists - how could anyone not know that?

Some people think they shouldn't pay tax.

Right, poor kids shouldn’t go to school. They should just dig ditches & work in Amazon warehouses all day starting in K.

K-12 could charge tuition and only be free for the truly needy.

Some people don't believe in society, and would rather return to a system where you survival and lifetime success is dictated by your ability to hoard resources and protect your own interests.

Me, I like society. I like paved roads and bridges that are inspected and maintained. I like clean water that comes out of a tap. I like parks and public safety and knowing my food, which I bought at a store and did not have to grow myself or barter for, is actually edible and won't kill me and my kids. I like books and television and movies and art, things no one would have the time or ability to make without stuff like infrastructure or functional cities.

I like kids just going to school, all kids, and getting a basic education so that they aren't idiots and can do things like work, vote, and raise families without screwing things up too bad.

I don't like anarchists, extreme libertarians, or idiots.

Don't make it free.

Make it equal price for everyone.

+1 everyone should get same price.

Imagine if we charged different prices for cars, houses, etc. based on an individual’s background. This is what colleges are doing.

I actually think black men should enjoy prima nocta privileges whenever a white, Hispanic or AAPI female turns 18. Seems like the least we can do, cause yaknow 400 years

So what should happen to kids whose parents did not? The kids have no control over that.
