Why so much anger towards people on welfare?

Actually only DC and Tennessee (I think) are the only two states/places that do direct cash assistance. Most states don’t spend their TANF money or do marriage counseling or abstinence education with TANF money.

But…but…someone’s insane MIL told me on Facebook about seeing someone buy lobster with food stamps that time! Surely ALL people living below the poverty line are doing exactly the same thing?

Americans need to keep up the myth that poor people are irresponsible, criminal, and completely undeserving of government subsidies so that middle and upper class people don’t feel bad about poverty and the government assistance they receive. Middle and upper class people are hard working and therefore deserving of the government aid.

After years of witnessing able bodied neighbors abuse the system while others work their tails off to make ends meet creates anger. Smelling your neighbor grilling out with steaks all summer long and playing in their backyard pool while your family is eating cheap pasta and can’t afford a vacation, that creates resentment.

I worked in a hospital where tons of patients were on all sorts of assistance yet somehow had the latest $800 phone and other accessories like nail tips done at a salon. Didn't add up... Not everyone was like that but there was obviously some abuse of the system going on.
