To facilitate athletic recruits or some other desired objective ? |
How about simply to build the class they want and to not deter good applicants from applying? |
My question is whether it is wise for your daughter to use her ED advantage on a school to which admission is unlikely as her GPA is below the typical admit & because she doesn't have a stellar standardized test score to offset her slightly low GPA. If she were a recruited athlete, then my recommendation would be different. Nevertheless, life is too short so if she is determined to attend Bowdoin or Middlebury, then go for it with the understanding that both schools are reaches. If close to being a recruited athlete & determined to attend an elite LAC, then maybe she should consider a PG year at an elite prep school like Lawrenceville, Andover, Exeter, St. Pauls, etc. There are several LACs which resemble Bowdoin & Middlebury but which are slightly less competitive for admission. It would help to know which aspects attract her to these two schools. |
Could a kid with a 4.0/4.75 from an MCPS school, SAT of 1530, lots of sports ECs with leadership roles get into one of these two schools ED? |
I should add - no hooks. |
Yes they would have a chance but no guarantees |
One kid with those stats will be accepted, but two others will be rejected. Bummer is you can't predict which one of those three is your kid. |
This is exactly what our private counselor said as well. |
|
The ability to ED and potentially full pay is a hook. |
Aren't both schools need-blind? |
Yes, of course they are. Full pay will not help one iota at Bowdoin or Midd. |
OP here. We have not heard back from Colby and Hamilton yet. The positive thing that happened in the meantime is that DD got her ACT July 15th scores which were a 33. Both schools have said the scores will help the application. Maybe they will help for Middlebury and Bowdoin also ![]() |
That's a great score, congrats. |
Really? Schools may be need blind, but not price insensitive. |
