What did you or your child do during the admissions process to make you facepalm?

During the HS interview, the Potomac interviewer asked my son where else he was applying and he said Sidwell—should have said somewhere less competitive IMHO.

I love this thread so much! It’s making me feel more calm and also had some good laughs.

We are applying for K this cycle and DC goes to a bilingual school for PK. He recently did his first play date at a big3 school. In the car on the way home, he told me that conducted the play date in his second language (counting, identifying pictures, etc). I thought it was clear that it should be done in English since everyone else was speaking English. Silly me!

After he did the assessments in his second language, the teacher applauded him and asked him to do it in English too. I had to ask questions a million different ways to get the full story.

For the remaining ones, I have clarified that they should be done in English. We both laughed but we’ll see if he gets in.

Applying for PK3, the school had a parent stay in the room with the child the whole time. I can see why parents might be more comfortable with this arrangement, but in my kid’s case, it made her super clingy and preoccupied with having me close by all the time, whereas I think if I hadn’t been in the room, I would’ve been out of sight and out of mind. In any event, kid was especially clingy and nervous at the beginning and dragged me over to a table with toys to play with her. When one of the teachers came over to interact, she turned to her and said, “I want mommy to stay here, and I want you to go away.” Later she loosened up but was being bossy and had to be reminded to share several times. Waitlisted.

I had a friend who was new to the area come to tour at a school where I was a board member.
The friend moved away from a toxic situation.

They asked a lot of security questions.

Later on I was told that the new parent sounded like they were looking for holes in the security system to come back and abduct children.

It did not go to the next phase.

DS was applying for K for a TT1 kindergarten in NYC.

He met with the HOA for an "interview."

During the interview he told the HOA he had to use the bathroom. She walked with him to the bathroom. When he came out he looked at her and said "my mommy makes our toilet over-FLOAT."

She told me this story when I picked him up.

He got in.
