Does anyone have any feedback on this public school in Rockville? Thanks |
we're in the neighborhood and plan to send our daughter to K there in the fall. The one or two families we know with kids there raves about it. |
We are across Old Georgetown Road from Luxmanor, so we won't be attending, but everyone we know who goes there raves about it. It's a very good elementary school. |
My youngest sibling attended Luxmanor and LOVED it. |
With the huge White Flint development expected in the near future, I personally would not want to move into this area (resulting traffic, over-crowded schools), etc. |
Do your research. The "huge" White Flint development will actually be a boon to the Luxmanor area - you will be walking distance to many amenities that you weren't before. None of the studies show an impact on Luxmanor - and indeed, even if there were a slight impact, any residential development is not slated to open for years, so no immediate impact on Luxmanor if any. The traffic will actually be better for walkers etc., not worse, if the plans go forward as requested with good public transportation and bike lanes. There will be good shops and eateries and green spaces. ON the other hand, if you are the sort who wouldn't want to live near a better Downtown Bethesda or Downtown Silver Spring, with access to great schools and public transportation, then by all means, move out somewhere else. This will not be the place for you. |
Another perspective is here:
http://www.whiteflintcommunitycoalition.blogspot.com/ They specifically address impact on the WJ cluster (with mention of Luxmanor) here: http://whiteflintcommunitycoalition.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html |
And for more info (the other, other side of the coin):
http://blog.friendsofwhiteflint.org/ As you can see, there are many voices in this particular debate. Debate is good, and in the end, I think all parties will be relatively satisfied with the outcome - even if all parties don't get exactly what they are hoping to get. |
Very few people in Luxmanor proper will be within walking distance to this new 'sector.' look at a map. Impacts to the schools are unclear. This development is proposed to bring 9,800 new residential units to the Walter Johnson Cluster, which includes a no. of elem. schools including Luxmanor ES. If you want to see what is snaking its way through the county council now on this enormous development, check the Montgomery County Planning Board website to read the proposed draft White Flint Sector Plan. You should also know a 'White Flint Sector II' plan is now in the works that will bring even more dense development.
Meanwhile the data from the plan are on the blog of the White Flint Community Coalition, at www.whiteflintcommunitycoalition.blogspot.com. The Luxmanor Citizens Association is a member of that coalition. (www.luxmanor.org). We do love our small Luxmanor ES and want to keep it in the neighborhood. Great staff and an active PTA keep the school a great neighborhood school. Also I think most people in our Luxmanor neighborhood were happy to see that the BOE is proposing moving Tilden MS (now on Old Georgetown Road) back to its original site on Tilden Lane so we once again will have a neighborhood middle school, too. I live in Luxmanor and it is a great place to live. |
I taught Junior Achievement for a few years at that school and was very impressed by it. The teachers all seemed motivated and the kids were diverse and engaged. It seemed like a real neighborhood school with parents and kids walking there in the morning. |

Not directly related, but also a question about Luxmanor neighborhood - any public outdoor swimming pools near by?
TIA |
Public - as in county - the closest is Bethesda. Montgomery Aquatic (indoor, but county) is a walking distance, but I wouldn't walk it.
There are several swim clubs in the neighborhood, with most belonging to tilden woods pool. |
IT IS A GREAT SCHOOL. Great teachers, staff and students. |
