We just discovered that program seems to be sending data from our home computers to MCPS every minute. We never consented to this and MCPS never put out any information about how this program works on home computers which many of us have been using since school buildings closed in March.
|
| Has anyone contacted MCPS about this massive privacy violation? Is there a tech person who can tell us how to disable? |
| It is sending data even when my child is not logged in. |
|
Have you child log out of his MCPSMD.NET account and it stops. He should only be logged into that account for schoolwork. Or borrow a Chromebook.
MCPS doesn’t actually care about your DH’s anime porn habit or that you are eager for Trump to be elected again. They do care about what students are doing via their school accounts. This is not unique of MCPS. |
| Why don't you just log out of your child's MCPS account when they aren't in school? GoGuardian only functions if your child is logged into MCPS, but if they are doing their own browsing they should be logged out anyway. |
| This is the thing. My child is logged out. My child wasn't even on the computer. DH was checking data for some issue related to work and found that my child's computer was sending information every minute from GoGuardian. |
| I thought what you thought that when we were logged out of the account it wouldn't communicate with GG but it does. Every minute. Literally pinging GG every minute and sending something. |
|
Perhaps location data? Or perhaps it is just trying to connect to a server to maintain a connection.
If you are worried about Go Gaurdian you should be terrified about how much data your computer and cell phone transmit even when you are not logged in. |
| I assume this is a chromebook, so it is MCPS property. Maybe the device is trying to phone home to log the Ip address. |
|
Why would you assume it's an MCPS chromebook?
It is a HOME computer, our computer which is not a Chromebook. |
Aware of that, thank you. DH was asked to run a systems check for work. Of all the devices that were sending things the one that was sending the most information, with the most frequency was GoGuardian from our shared computer. |
| That’s not how the program works. It is linked to a user, not a device. |
| Let Jack Smith know. I'm sure he has no idea what Go Guardian is. |
If your child is the first to use the computer in the morning, is it possible that the Chrome account that the rest of you are using is the one linked to his mcps.net account? |
I don't think you understand technology. GoGuardian is a chrome extension. It is theoretically supposed to activate when a particular user is logged in but extensions that are installed can be activated by other users. These are serious concerns. https://thehill.com/opinion/technology/506219-online-learning-hiccups-lead-to-civil-liberty-threats |
