Non-COVID times.
Would you rather live in a nice, spacious apartment in NYC or a large house with lots of outdoor space in Greenwich (or potentially Rye or Larchmont)? Assuming job location is not a factor. |
With or without children? |
With! And private school is doable if necessary. |
I would pick a nice suburb. So great having outdoor space with kids. We live in Larchmont and my kids both bike and walk all around town independently which is so nice. I also really like Greenwich which also has much lower property taxes than Westchester towns. |
+1. NYC is magical and lovely. But it is a GRIND to do every day things, even if you're rich. It's also loud and dirty and traffic is a nightmare and spaces are tiny. If your job doesn't matter, a place in a suburb close to NYC is your best bet. |
-1. I love urban life with kids, it's so more fun and enriching and easier in many ways too. I hate driving and love that we can walk everywhere with the kids. |
Suburbs |
I grew up in Greenwich (MS + HS)
Its one of the most monumentally boring places for a teen. I would pick NYC hands down, so long as it took no more than 5 mins to walk to Central Park. And I'd personally prefer Upper West side to Upper East. Maybe as far as Morningside Drive. |
I hate suburbs. We have a brownstone in the city and a county home in Litchfield County. Best of both worlds. |
Rye |
NYC without a doubt. Live near Central Park and it's like having a backyard for the kids. It is so easy to Uber anywhere and not have to deal with driving or parking. I have everything delivered, which makes life so easy. |
These days, with Covid, I'd choose the suburbs |
