Darien versus Greenwich? |
Darien is a small town. Lots of people who live there also went to high school together. Greenwich is more diverse. |
What PP said. Both towns are super wealthy and full of hedge fund guys, home prices are probably comparable, but Greenwich definitely is somewhat more diverse in terms of demographics and socioeconomics. Darien is small and can be very cliquey for sure. Both towns are on the Sound and have nice beaches. School systems are comparable in quality (excellent) although Greenwich HS is much larger than DHS. Greenwich has a much more thriving downtown area. Downtown Darien is one long strip with the Metro North tracks cutting it in half, and there are developers redoing entire sections of the commercial area to look more matchy-matchy, but I don't think that will help the fact that it is a long strip with no real center. Both have Metro-North train service and access to I-95 and the Merritt Parkway. If you commute to NYC, Greenwich is going to be a faster train ride or drive - commuting from Darien is a few stations further out, and the traffic between Norwalk and Greenwich is awful in rush hour. I'd look very strongly at your commute when choosing.

Thank you! Very helpful. Job is in Greenwich. Can you tell me about the Tokeneke neighborhood? Is it a good place to raise kids (currently not in school - DC will enter in 2 years)? Did you like growing up there? Thank you again! |
Wonderful neighborhood. I would move to Darien in a minute if I could. Love being by the water. |
I grew up in Greenwich - MS and HS. Best schools and very international (I'm European and my dad was in corporate finance). Its also a lot more diverse than you'd think despite some of the enormous wealth.
Darien was much more "back country" as others have described. |
What do you mean "back country"? |
Which part of Greenwich did you live in? |
I would far prefer Greenwich. Darien is known as being uber waspy and cliquey. |
Greenwich is truly lovely. My friend lives in Riverside (a neighborhood in Greenwich) - great community, walkable to shops and restaurants, 10 minute to drive to the main downtown area (including the Greenwich train station that runs express trains to NYC), 10 minute drive to an amazing beach. She's really happy with the schools and it's kind of a family's haven - tons of sports, activities, camps, enrichment programs, etc. |

New poster here tuning in. I'm considering a job in Stamford. Is it a reasonable commute from Wilton or New Canaan? |
seriously? You can't look up the Amtrak schedule? |
Go with new Canaan- much closer with backroad access to Stamford -grew up in area |
If you are Jewish, don't move to Darien |
