San Diego people in the know...should I get a house with a pool?

Anonymous
Hi all. About to move to San Diego area from another state. Specifically to Carmel Valley area near Del Mar. I am debating about houses with a pool because I am not sure they will be warm enough to swim for me. I typically prefer about 82 degrees to get in and I don't know if some of these pools are heated. What do you think? Would it be worth it or would the water just be too cold most of the time, assuming they don't have covers or heaters? Thanks for your help!

Yes! Of course they’re heated. Unless it’s an old pool. Double check first. Do you have kids? you will probably regret not getting a pool, if so.

Add a solar cover. We use ours all the time. Keeps the pool from losing heat at night. Pool is easily 85 degrees for 75% of the summer. Get a roller to easily take on and off the pool.

I grew up in San Diego and no one I knew had pools. Sure some people have them, but San Diego isn't like DC or Florida or Texas where it is so hot in the summer that you can't really do anything unless are you swimming.

OP here. Should have included that I will be renting. Thanks for any help...

If you are renting, sure get a pool. Carmel Valley is east of the 5 Freeway which means it will be hotter. Your kids will love it while they are getting settled.

+1 east of the 5 will get much hotter than whatever the "san diego" temperature your phone says. A pool Is a real plus, for sure.

I agree. I grew up in Orange county and only knew a handful of people with a pool. My parents live in San Diego (Rancho Bernardo area) now and live in a community with a pool.

Hmm. I live in suburban Southern California and pools are pretty ubiquitous.

Get the pool, make sue it is heated. San Diego is far from tropics, I is really coldish and nights are just plain cold. Year round.
So if you will get the pool without heating you will never use as it is freezing.

I live in a beach town in Southern California and we have a pool. It has been great during the quarantine but my kids prefer to go to the beach. On the summer they do junior lifeguards at the beach. How old are your kids?

I used to live in SD and I remember going to our community pool after voting at our community center in November. It's usually sunny, and you could use a heated pool for much of the year.

This. My brother lives in SD, and I visit him reasonably often. He doesn't have a pool, but he's building his dream home and will have one there.

It depends a little where you are how hot it is. But, on average, if you like a really warm pool you'll need it heated or a high quality solar cover. With those, though, it'll be pool weather much of the year.
