Quebec is sending kids back to school-here are the conditions

-To minimize movement, we forecast assigning students to classes nearest to Berlin street entrance (on all 3 floors, if needed only);
-Once assigned to a class, students will spend their entire day (including lunchtime) in their assigned seats
-Students must expect to regroup based on the number of students returning
-Students must not expect to return to their regular class with their classmates;
-Your child may not be with the same teachers as before as several members of our staff will not be returning to school
-Teachers not returning to school will continue working and keeping close contact with students remotely from home as recommended by the government
-Activities completed while in school will not be evaluated or graded
-No physical materials will be transported back and forth between home and school
-Students must include a mini garbage and recycling bag with their lunch in which to collect their personal garbage to dispose of at home
-All students must bring in their personal, labelled, and filled water bottle as water fountains won’t be available
-Sharing of ALL items (pencils, pens, sharpeners, wax crayons, rulers, toys) is not permitted
-When weather permits, recess breaks will be held outdoors & will entail of walking outside safely distanced from one another in a pre-arranged pattern
-Gatherings (groups of students together) will not be permitted
-Limited travel within the school by all throughout the day
-Bathrooms visits will be monitored/escorted so that proper disinfection by outside caretakers can follow before another student uses the facilities
-As per government recommendations, masks and gloves will not be provided. Students are certainly welcome to bring these items from home. They are invited to carry their personal disinfecting wipes with them if they wish
-Lockers will no longer be used. Students will place their spring/summer jackets behind their chair they will be using and their schoolbag under their assigned chair
-There will be no cafeteria service or home & school pizza and frozen yogurt days
-There will be no physical activity taking place in the gym, no art classes (although art and craft projects can be promoted as home suggestions), no library periods, and no drama classes
-No fundraisers or after school activities will take place
-Parent volunteers will not be permitted in schools
-We recommend your child brings a book or two of interest from home to read
-Student with fever or flu like symptoms will be returned home

It sounds pretty draconian, especially the part about staying in their assigned seat for the entire day.

This seems awful overall. I almost think they should just wait rather than implementing all of this.

Some of these measures are great though-like not having kids share utensils.

I would keep both of my ES kids home. Different teachers, different classmates, staying in their seat for the entire day including lunch? Not worth it.

It also sounds like only a small portion of kids are attending. Like parts of Australia where schools are open for essential workers, attendance is about 3% and kids are being watched by teacher who are also conducting distance learning.

The walking around outside in a “pre-arranged pattern” is...bizarre. How are they going to get kids to cooperate with that?

Wow.

This is nuts and too restrictive. I’m all or nothing. Either send the kids back just like before covid or don’t

But the economy...

Schools need to provide the cleaning supplies. They have the responsibility for cleanliness, and as government bodies, they should have access to supplies that the average person cannot get. Trash should be put in the school dumpster on the way out. This does not sound clean at all. I would only use it if I had childcare needs.

So I assume you would homeschool them. Otherwise you’re breaking the law.

I cannot see this happening in my school. I would want to know what can be done about students who refuse to follow these rules (because our school will have quite a few of them).

I'm not all or nothing, I will send my kids to school with some (or lots) of changes. But these measures are too much for me.

My ADHD/ASD kid would completely fail in this environment, which would be stressful for his teachers and devastating for him. I hope they come up with better solutions than this.

How often do kids need to attend? Because there are going to be a LOT of kids who need lots of mental health days. I sure would. -NP

No, Quebec is very clear that it's voluntary, and that only about 20% of students are expected to return.
