Can Lafayette with 1,000 kids re-open in the Fall?

Can an elementary school like Lafayette with a thousand kids safely keep appropriate distances and open in the Fall?
Anonymous
No! That is why they shouldn’t be stopping school 5/29. Things could be even worse in the Fall. They are not going to be able to make up that time.

Nope.

That sounds impossible...

Nope. Not fair to expect young kids to social distance or go to school wearing masks.

As PP noted above they should not have stopped distance learning in May.

Chance kids go to school on a part time basis to keep class size smaller.

No elementary school can do that, unless it's tiny. Little kids cannot be expected to maintain six-foot distances, properly wear masks, wash their hands adequately and frequently enough. Teachers can't teach classes like that. They can do things like increase the frequency of cleaning classrooms, enforce more handwashing, require kids to stay home if they are sick, etc. But the CDC guidelines? Not possible.

This has to do with staff not building space. A tiny school is going to have the same difficulties - you can't have more than 10-15 kids in a classroom which means you need two teachers per class (and two classrooms). This is why all schools no matter size will have staggered days with online work on the others. This part is teh same for all. For big schools the challenge will be start and end times since you can't have 1/2 the school beginning or ending at the same time. There will be no recess for anyone.

Class size in most areas of the USA are too large. Our schools are not set up for any of this.

There will be recess and free play it is the required by law. It may or may not be on a playground equipment.

Fair? It is a pandemic, people. Nothing about this is fair.

It is unrealistic to expect young kids to keep masks on

This is why the CDC guidelines are going to have to change. No way can this be accommodated, and no way will people think it's reasonable, going on Month 6.

You do understand that many “laws” are being suspected where needed right? PARCC is required by law too.

Can DCPS open some schools and keep others closed for in person learning? Seems like a flexible attitude may be needed if certain parts of the city are hit harder than others.

No. Too many Interdependent parts. Also schools in one ward have out of bounds kids from another wars. It will be one policy for all of DCPS.
